What Does “Brachycephalic” Mean? Brachycephalic dogs and cats are breeds with shortened noses and flat faces. While they’re adorable, their unique anatomy can make it much harder for them to breathe—especially in warm weather. Common brachycephalic breeds include: * Bulldogs (English and French) * Pugs * Boston Terriers * Boxers * Shih Tzus * Pekingese * Lhasa Apsos * Cavalier King Charles Spaniels * Persian cats * Himalayan cats * Exotic Shorthair cats Why Heat Is So Dangerous Unlike people, dogs and cats do not sweat to cool themselves. They rely primarily on panting. Brachycephalic animals often have narrowed nostrils, elongated soft palates, and smaller airways, making panting much less effective. On hot days, they can quickly become overheated because they cannot move enough air to cool their bodies. Even temperatures that seem comfortable to us can be dangerous for them, especially if humidity is high or there is little airflow. Heat stroke can develop rapidly and become life-threatening. Watch for warning signs such as: * Excessive or noisy panting * Difficulty breathing * Bright red or pale gums * Drooling * Weakness or staggering * Vomiting * Collapse or loss of consciousness Protect Your Flat-Faced Pet * Keep them indoors in air conditioning during hot weather. * Exercise only during the coolest parts of the day. * Always provide fresh, cool water. * Never leave them outside unattended in the heat. * Never leave them in a parked vehicle—not even for a few minutes. * If they show signs of heat stress, move them to a cool area immediately, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, wet them with cool water, and seek emergency veterinary care right away. Their flat faces may be part of their charm, but they also make these pets especially vulnerable to heat. A little extra caution can save their lives.
