Description

White, grey and blue budgie with yellow on the face

Message from Finder

I’ve been tracking this beautiful bird all week. He (or she) has been adopted by a wild flock of sparrows and is never alone. According to the community, he’s been here with them for weeks. He seems very happy, but it will get cold soon. I have tried to lure him with budgie treats, and while he will happily chirp with me, he won’t leave the flock, and seems more interested in foraging than taking the budgie food. I have left a container out near some of their preferred trees (where I first saw him) with food and water. So far, he’s been super easy to find, but impossible to catch.

Jay Grovet thank you so much for this thoughtful reply. He is never without his flock of wild sparrows, and while I first spotted them on the ground, they will only stay close-ish to me from the safety of the trees. He’ll chirp happily to me from a branch, but won’t come down with the others until I’m far away. 2 days ago, I made a little makeshift house with a travel hamster container I bought, filled it with spray millet, a water container beside it, and put my phone beside it playing budgie calls on Spotify. I stayed nearby with a butterfly net, but no luck. He is always in the surrounding area, but not in a yard, so somewhat challenging to monitor unless from a street corner or sidewalk. He is easy to find every day, impossible to catch. I’ve spent hours every day trying. He seems very happy, but it’s starting to get colder and I am really concerned. I’ll try something like your picture over the weekend and see if it might be more effective. People throw a lot of nuts and seeds in that public area, it’s pretty filthy, and would be hard to clean up so that the only food would be in the trap. I’ll see what’s possible. I hope I, or someone can catch him before it gets too cold. I wish there was a service who could come help! It’s been really hard to get in touch with anyone who can.

Can you coax down to the ground with seed/millet so that it can be captured? If skittish, it would be best to use fishing/butterfly net but can improvise. Can also try playing budgie flock calls (YouTube) to get it's attention. If it's becoming a frequent visitor and stays in area, you can set up a simple trap that has proven effective catching budgies in the past. You would have to remove feeders nearby and isolate food source under trap. It also has to be monitored, as it drops when you pull string. A number of budgies have been rescued this way. You can essentially use this same method with a spare cage equipped with treats, with string tied to door. They rely heavily on the bystanders that spot them & this budgie would be forever grateful as it will surely perish otherwise, especially with the weather turning.
