Urgent Tips for missing dog Best of luck! Here’s some information that might be helpful. It’s best not to wait to see if your dog is going to come back. Take immediate action to try to locate. Notify county control, animal control, humane society, animal recovery groups, vets, & post lost flyers in the area. WHEN SEARCHING-Take smelly food & leash to use as slip lead every time. DO NOT CALL OR YELL for your dog by name -he may think he's in trouble & run off. Use nicknames that you use while playing-baby, good boy, or key words like-go for a ride, treat etc. Squeaky toys. IF SEEN-DO NOT CHASE you will push him out of the area or into traffic. DO NOT SEARCH ON QUADS-you will push the dog out of the area. IF SEEN-drive past & get ahead of your dog -pull off road & get out & drop to the ground -don’t make eye contact & toss treats in his direction-talking up upbeat voice & nummy noises to try to lure in with smelly food-microwaved hot dogs cut up small, chicken nuggets, rotisserie chicken-cheeseburgers etc . If he runs-do not chase-leave food on the ground to create a feeding station to keep him in the area & get back in car. If you have a sibling dog or dog he plays with on a regular basis-you can walk the dog around the area the dog was last seen & let them urinate in that area & then lead directly back to your house or a trap that has been set. Do not let it randomly walk around. Your lost dog can pick up the scent & follow it home. IF SEEN-sit on the ground & play with your other dog -get it to bark, yip & play. It will recognize that dog before it does you. Also it's important to leave your worn unwashed clothing (used pillow case-socks, sweatshirts) & something of the dog's (blanket, pillow,bedding etc) on your porch with smelly food. You can boil hotdogs in crockpot & leave plugged in w/lid off so smell will travel. If the dog is close-grill bacon on your property or at the area of a recent sighting. If you have-get your other dog to keep barking to draw home. If it is not raining or snowing- you can sprinkle flour near your porch or gate to check for paw prints. LOST FLYERS-can be made - make a master copy. Get lost flyers printed using bright NEON colored paper (green-orange-pink) so they stand out-posted in the area at every intersection (using duct tape on metal poles) & every other telephone pole (staple 4 corners) immediately so you can receive calls of sightings or in the event someone found -they will know who to contact. Use gal sized zip lock bags with zipper part at the bottom to protect from wind/rain. Post at eye level -angled so approaching cars can see. Get some flyers made 4 to a sheet so you can cut & pass out to everyone you see. A dog can go into survival mode after 24-48 hours on the run - a trap maybe your best chance of capturing if that occurs.

Make sure you post on: nextdoor, ring doorbell, lost and found pets, pawboost, petcolove, petfbi, any state, city, and county sites. Let the police, vets, and animal shelters know your dog is missing. If your dog is chipped, let the chip company know also. Put some hot smelly food out on your porch like: hotdogs, smoky links, rotisserie chicken, or canned chicken. I put it on a tortilla if you have one. Get liquid smoke(comes where the Bar-B-Q sauce is in the store), add to a squirt bottle with water, and spray in the trees near your house. If you don't have liquid smoke,it's okay, you can make juice with chicken broth+Bar-B-Q sauce. Boil it on the stove. Add chili powder or another stinky spice. Make sure it's boiling hot and drizzle it on the lawn up to the porch. Also, put something with your scent on it (pillowcase or shirt work great) on the porch too. If you don't have a camera on your porch, take a bag of flour. Make a ring around the food a couple inches out. Mound it all the way around like ant hills. That way You can tell what's eating the food, whether it's a dog or a raccoon or cat, etc. If you have another dog, take it out for a walk and let it lead you.It may be able to pick the missing dog's scent up. Dogs normally make a circle to come back to where they go missing from within 24-48 hours. The bigger the dog, the bigger the circle. If yours does not, YOUR Next Step needs to be getting flyers up! There is a free site where you can make colorful flyers called postermywall.com. Almost every dog I have recovered has been because of flyers, not social media •DO NOT CALL YOUR DOG WHEN LOOKING FOR THEM. IT WILL MAKE THEM RUN! •Check cemeteries, schools, golf courses, parks, and cul-de-sacs. Dogs like these because they are quiet. •Make sure that you don't post sightings on social media. You don't want well-meaning people running out to help as he/she will be scared and may run, which could put them in danger. • Posting a reward can also bring out people who only want the money and if they chase the dog, it could also end up running out of fear and into danger. •Do not go to where he/she was seen and call out for him/her as that could scare them and push them out of the area or into danger! You want him/her to settle down and stay in one area so he/she can be trapped, if necessary. Instead take some stinky food and place in a safe place, if you have a camera put it in front the food - to see if he/she comes to eat it. ** If you (THE OWNER) see your dog, do not call out to them or make eye contact- Sit on the ground. Always have some stinky food with you(Hot dogs, rotisserie chicken, or a small bag of Cheetos), to help lure them to you. Do not say anything or make quick moves. Your dog needs to see you, hear you, and smell you - before he/she can process who you are and come to you!!! Once they approach, quietly say a phrase they would be familiar with. If they walk away, stay put for a few minutes. They may be trying to get your scent. If they leave DO NOT CHASE them. If someone calls and says they have your dog, ask them to take a picture. If they say they saw your dog, ask them a trick question like, " oh, does he still have his orange collar on?" If you feel it's legit, ask " what were they doing- running, walking, etc. And which direction did they go in.
