You can’t scan for a chip with an app on a phone, it has to be an actual microchip scanner :) shelters and vet clinics can scan for them! That way, if she is chipped, they can find her owner’s information and contact them!

SHELTERS USUALLY SHOW THE DOG/PET ON THERE PAGE BUT SAY DOG IS NOT AT THE SHELTER! THANK YOU for keeping her safe and for her own comfort OUT of the shelter where it is noisy and chaotic for an older girl. 💕

Cyndi Lynne they have to report it to animal control and the humane society. Not shelters. The people designated for it. Refusing to bring it to the shelter because of their own views goes against what the Idaho legislature says. Humane society, Idaho legislature all quote these laws. You can find them on the Humane society website and with a simple google search. Keeping a stray is unlawful. It must be turned over to animal control. They specifically stated they will not turn it over to a shelter. Which is what the law states should be done. In the post you see here where they specifically stated they will not turn it into a shelter. This is considered theft under Idahos laws as pets are considered property and must be turned over to Animal Control.

Kristiana Lafleur I actually have called animal control and the humane society and am doing what they told me to do. Not doing anything illegal because I am not preventing the owner from taking her should they surface. Animal control and the shelter have my phone number and address in case some call looking for her. It’s the same as abandoned property laws. I have no intention on keeping her from her family, shall they not claim her I will give a good life instead of living in a cage for however long they give her to be adopted, with her being an old dog chances are she will not be adopted and will be put down and I’m sorry Caren but I can’t let that happen. So maybe before you read on the internet and think you’re a lawyer you should do more research.

Can you take her to get checked for a chip. Any vet will do it for free. Viking Vet is open 24/7. Thank you for taking care of her.

This is illegal! Idaho has laws against this! You are required to hand that pet over to animal control or humane society! This is considered theft! Please do not be like this person and do this. I understand you think you are doing what is best for the animal, however you are breaking the law and causing a complicated situation when you hold the pet hostage. This is not the proper way to reunite pets.
