Cats typically don't stray far from home and will return home on their own if left alone. This is especially true for cats that spend most of their time indoors, as it would appear yours does. When they escape, they tend to hide (silently) so focus your search on possible hiding places and anywhere your cat could get trapped - e.g. a garage or shed left open temporarily. If Ash is microchipped, make sure the chip registration is up to date. And check at the shelter (especially if he's not microchipped). Hope you find him soon.

Try putting a piece of your dirty clothes outside maybe the cat can smell your scent good luck

Erika Wehmeyer Watson thank you so much for your concern. We are well aware of this risk associated with him going outside and we definitely do not let him. He sometimes sits by the back door and runs out the minute we open it to come in which is what happened in this case
