This advice for if the cat is friendly or feral. check with neighbors, post on nextdoor or any neighborhood facebook pages or email lists. If there is no owner, coax with food into your garage or indoors or into a carrier. If you have a carrier, any clinic can scan for a chip. If not, call dispatch 608-255-2345 and they can pick up from a garage or a carrier and take to the humane society Feral cat advice It could be a feral cat or a lost cat who is now afraid of people. Can you or a neighbor set some food out and see if you can get it to come consistently and then assess if it becomes friendly. If it is not afraid of people and you can coax it into your garage, you can call dispatch 608-255-2345 and they will come and take it to the humane society. If the cat is not friendly and is still afraid, the outcome at the shelter may be negative. In that case, optimally, it can be live trapped and fixed and released and continue to be fed. That way it wont make any more cats. Once trapped the clinic can scan it for a chip to see if it is lost. You can borrow a raccoon trap from a police dept (not in Madison), a neighbor, buy it at the hardware store or rent it from Madison cat project clinic@madisoncatproject.org. Start feeding in an unset trap and gradually move the food to the back and then set it when the cat goes far into the trap. I have comprehensive trapping directions here. https://wicatinfo.weebly.com/trapping-a-lost-or-stray-cat For the winter you can put a chemical hand warmer between 2 paper plates, and it will keep wet food from freezing or put a heating pad under the bowl. Once cat is trapped, cover trap with a towel and put indoors or in your garage - hopefully there is a source of heat or pop in a space heater. You can then take it to WI Veterinary Center for a 50 dollar fix, https://www.wicvc.org/outdoorcatprogram After the fix it can recover in the trap in a garage or a small room and can be released after 24-48 hours. You can feed thru the cage bars in the trap. It will be fine! Release and continue feeding. You can buy a heated house or make your own from a large styrofoam container or a plastic tub. Fill with straw only. Hay and blankets attract moisture and the cat can freeze in winter.
