Pumpkin's Owner Says

Pumpkin showed up at the door this morning, hungry and unwashed, but otherwise fine. Don’t if he had just gotten out of some confinement or if he’d climbed into a vehicle and the driver had just returned him. But I’m very grateful for Pawboost and to all our family, neighbors and friends who have been in the look-out for Pumpkin. We are so lucky! I hope more people and pets can be just as fortunate..

Rent or borrow a humane trap. The SPCA and other animal shelters rent them out for $100. When you return the trap you get your $100 back. Place the trap near where the cat escaped. Put some of the cat's favorite food and treats inside of the trap along with an article of your clothing with your scent on it. This method worked for me on two different occasions. If you trap the wrong cat or some other animal, put a blanket over the trap leaving the door exposed. Stand behind the trap and release the animal. Reset the trap. Time is of the essence so do this asap. Good luck and God bless.

A MUCH NEEDED REPEATED NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A LOST PET, PLEASE KNOW THAT . . . the biggest scams out there are pet recovery scams. They claim they have found your lost pet post and tell you they have your pet but need money to get gas to get to you, or that they need a payment first for any number of reasons. They may also request a code being sent to confirm who you are. **DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY!** **DO NOT SEND ANY CODES!** More than likely the people that found your dog or cat aren't even in Pennsylvania. They scour the internet for lost pets and work off desperation to find a missing beloved family member. There should be no fees involved in pet recoveries. This group wasn't put in place for people to make money off of the trauma of others, but to be supportive volunteers willing to lend a hand. If you see a comment on a post made by what appears to be a pet recovery scammer, please report to the Admins.

Put up fliers at post offices, vet offices, stores, gyms, anywhere you can think of and in mailboxes in the area. Go door to door to let people know the cat is missing. Go in person to local shelters (SPCA, etc) and do not rely on phone calls because they are busy and might not check. Put out the used litter box and some of your worn unwashed clothing and a bed or blanket he sleeps on so he can track the scent. Check under all neighborhood decks, porches, sheds and ask people to check inside their sheds and garages. Also check under and around all landscaping (shrubs, bushes, flower beds, etc.) in the neighborhood. Let the area mailman know to keep an eye out for him. Go out at night with the flashlight calling his name and shaking food or treats. Borrow a humane trap from a shelter, rescue group, vet, etc. Fill it with smelly food like KFC rotisserie chicken, sardines or tuna and cover it with a blanket or towel. If she is microchipped contact the company immediately to be sure your contact information is up to date. They may also help with creating fliers, etc. Go in person to local vets to inquire if someone may have brought her in. Post on other local Facebook groups for lost and found pets, and Nextdoor for your town.

Ask someone if they have a drone (possibly heat/thermal for night vision) to have them use it to find your cat and if your cat fits the description ask if you can view their video tapes to see if it's her. Post in newspaper bc not everyone has internet or facebook, ask if you can air on your local news channel, ask your neighbors if they can check security cameras to see if she's on the recording to see where she headed last. Put fliers on the 2 back windows of your vehicle.

one of the most critical steps in recovery: get large, attention-grabbing signs up all over the area where the cat was lost or is being sighted. Driving around aimlessly or relying on hope and prayer does not bring lost cats home. Signs do. Clear, bold, visible signage saves lives. It alerts neighbors, drivers, and businesses to be on the lookout. It turns one set of eyes into hundreds. Start with a minimum of 100 signs. Do not hand them out-ask people to take a photo of your sign instead. Please—if your cat is missing or if you’re helping someone search—don’t skip the signage. It’s not optional. It’s the difference between a reunion and a tragedy.
