I will tell you a story that should give you hope. Years ago when I taught at Balboa HS in San Francisco, I got to my classroom on the third floor early in the morning. I looked at the window overlooking the courtyard, and there was a cockatiel perched on a branch in a tall tree. he remained their all morning during my classes. During my break time, I went in the courtyard and borrowed a ladder from the janitor. I asked a boy to climb it with a seed stick that I had bought from across the street. No luck. The bird would not move. Later on, I looked in the missing pets section of the San Francisco Chronicle. There was an ad from a woman in Burlingame, who said her cockatiel named Kiko was missing. We tried again, and this time the boy called the cockatiel by name. It immediately perked up, squawking, and walked directly to the boy, who placed the bird under his hat. We put the cockatiel in a box with a lid and I called its owner on the phone. I delivered Kiko to her after school. He had flown around 15 miles from his home to where I found him.
