These are general search tips and not all may apply in your situation. Search at night with a flashlight (eyes will glow). Check up in trees and inside/under/behind things in your yard and up to 3 - 4 houses away. Search garages, sheds, under decks and bushes, in crawl spaces, behind AC units, under dumpsters - any place the cat might be trapped or hiding. Many cats go into hiding mode for safety and won't come when they hear their owner's voice. Try calling and try either shaking a can/bag of treats or carrying an open (smelly) can of cat food or fish. Put something w/ the cat's scent on the porch (cat bed, scratching post, owner's worn clothing - every once in a while someone will chime in stating this is incorrect but lots of people have had success doing this ). Keep your garage door up enough to allow entry, or a back door or window open if safe to do so. Keep fresh bowls of water out. Put up large missing cat posters (neon poster board works well), talk to neighbors (leave info for those not home). Post info on all local social media groups and make sure to check with local animal control at least once a week (better to go in person but at least call and send them a photo). If not found at night with a flashlight, go out during early morning before dawn, as many cats are active around that time. If not found in a few days, you can always buy a humane cat trap but traps *must* be checked multiple times each day, every day, and not used during bad weather. If the cat is microchipped, please make sure the chip company has your updated contact information. And even if the cat has a chip, you still need to check with animal control as chips sometimes are overlooked or migrate down. If you live in, or near, an apartment complex, notify the apartment manager and maintenance team about the missing cat. Please search often and don't give up hope. Beware of unsolicited texts/emails claiming they have your pet but need money to release info or the pet - those are scams and should be reported to police.

Make sure your cat really got out. Recently within a 2-week period five different people thought they're cat Got out and they all ended up being found later somewhere in the house including one that was found in a cabinet that was hardly used 3 days later. Make sure you check behind furniture under furniture, dresser, drawers, closets, etc. About 18 years ago, my daughter thought her kitten somehow got out. Even though they were very careful. We didn't realize it until about 7:00 p.m. At night and we all looked until sunset and finally gave up. We all came back in the house and my granddaughter went in her bottom dresser drawer and Thankfully found the kitten snuggled up among her scarves. That also happened to me last year. My one cat gets real spooked. My granddaughter came over and I realized when she left that my cat was nowhere around for dinner. I looked high and low and couldn't figure out where he went. I couldn't find him the next morning either so I was really freaking out and thinking maybe he got behind the washer or dryer and or something terrible happened and couldn't figure out how he might have escaped since I take many precautions to keep my cats from getting out. It was over 24 hours later. My daughter and her husband finally came over and start moving heavy furniture and as I was giving up hope since he was moving the last piece of furniture lo and behold the cat came running out from behind the tall pier dresser and darted right under the bed. It was hard to believe that he was so scared that he hid for over 24 hours. As I turned around again he disappeared and I then realized he must have one went right back behind the pierdresser again until my son-in-law and daughter left and I shook the dresser and he finally came out to eat. Sometimes they get spooked for some reason it might hide. That happened several years ago when I also got a mattress delivering and it came 2 hours early and my cats cats were not put away as I planned to. After the delivery men left, I couldn't find my cat anywhere. About 9 hours later when I was serving dinner all of a sudden the cat came creeping down the stairs. Again. He must have been hiding behind the dresser because he was so scared when the delivery man came. In fact, I followed the delivery truck to the next stop thinking. Somehow he got hidden in my mattress. I was thankful that he finally came out. Hope to hear good news soon....

A worn piece of clothing often works well on your porch as well as a piece of clothing that I mentioned previously inside your garage near the opening. It would also be good to post on neighbors ring app which covers three plus mile radius of your location and alerts people that have the app. It would be especially good to focus on a one to two block radius of your home and go out at Dawn, dusk And feeding time shaking a bag of cat treats or cat food vigorously to help attract your cat's attention if it's nearby and bring a flashlight with you to help catch a glimpse of its eyes if it's near. While you're in this area Make sure you check trees, shrubbery window wells and especially under decks and porches where cats often hide and ask your neighbors to check their shed in garage where cats also often hide. Hope to hear good news soon. Good luck!

Flyers are very important. They are best put in a zip gallon bag that is upside down to protect from the elements. It was just recently that both the dog and a cat were reunited by flyers alone since the people that found the animals did not have social media. If you adopted from a rescue, they usually like to know ASAP that a former animal is missing. If your cat has a microchip, it's good to make sure your contact information is up to date so you can be contacted if your cat is found. Cats tend to stay close to home before they wander so time is of the essence. Make sure your cat is not hiding in the garage in a closet in a dresser, drawer or behind furniture which often happens. I've heard of a few cats returning home the past few years when the owner left their garage open about 5 inches with a worn piece of clothing on the inside of the garage near the opening to help attract the cat if it comes close back to home but not too wide. So you do not attract unwanted animals. It's good if you go check outside on your block around Dawn and dusk with a flashlight looking in shrubbery and under decks and porches to hopefully catch a glimpse of your cat's eyes if it is close by. Usually cats are scared when they first leave home and might not even respond to you. So the flashlight might come in handy to catch a glimpse of the eyes. It's also good to check your local animal control in person daily because things change very often and best in person. It's also good to check local rescues and shelters in your area daily. Hoping for a quick and safe return.....
