Message from Finder

This turtle showed up in our driveway. We found it on its back. Didn't look in good shape- very dry. Gave it water and made a nice little temp for him/her. Big mystery how it ended up where it did. We have a long driveway....

In California, you can contact these specialized organizations for guidance or rehoming: California Turtle & Tortoise Club (CTTC): Has multiple chapters, including the Valley Chapter in Woodland Hills. Southern California Turtle Rescue: Specializes in rehoming and rescue services. San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society: Offers rescue and adoption services. emporary Care (for Escaped Pets) If you must house an escaped pet turtle while searching for its owner: Enclosure: Use a large plastic tub or Rubbermaid container (at least 50 gallons for an adult) rather than a glass aquarium, which can be stressful and poorly ventilated. Substrate: Provide a moist bedding like cypress mulch, topsoil, or orchid bark mixed with peat moss so the turtle can burrow. Avoid sand or gravel. Hydration: Provide a shallow water dish (like a plant saucer) deep enough for the turtle to soak up to its "elbows" but shallow enough to prevent drowning. Feeding: Offer a varied diet of roughly 50% animal protein (earthworms, crickets, or slugs) and 50% plant matter (dark leafy greens like collard or dandelion greens, and small amounts of fruit like strawberries or melon). Whole Prey: Instead of ground beef, offer earthworms, crickets, or snails. These provide the natural "crunch" and calcium from ss/exoskeletons that meat lacks. Incentivize with Color: Box turtles are highly attracted to red and orange. Using small bits of cantaloupe, berries, or carrots can encourage them to try new foods.
