Diana EllisI will use the blanket first. I don’t think we have a tree tall enough to reach the patio but I’m going to try that Saturday evening (i work overnight and get out at 6) and I will let you know. Thank you so much for all the advice you’ve given me, it’s been very helpful. I did leave food out by the door if it’s eaten when I get home, I will let you know.

Emily Rivera, my only hesitation about using the tree is that when a cat sees something appear in the landscape that wasn't there before, they can hesitate to return to that spot -- even if it's something they know from a different place. Is the tree tall enough if set on the ground for him to reach the porch? I might try the blanket approach first to see if he'll come out of hiding for you, and if not, because this is a special circumstance, you may have to give the tree a try if it would reach the hole in the screen. In my experience when guardians have placed items from inside into the landscape, in general most cat will object because the terrain doesn't match the map they made of it during their escape. This is a unique situation, however, and it may be the only way Grumpy can make his way home. Let me know what happens.

Diana Ellis No he didn’t use the stairs. I will try that and do you think using his favorite cat tree could work? he has a cat tree that he adores and relaxes on it all the time.
