Emily Rivera, I am so sorry I didn't see your reply until now. Are you saying he jumped from your second floor porch and landed on the ground? That means he didn't use the stairs, right? If he leapt directly to the ground and there's no way for Grumpy to return to the porch, you can try luring him as you suggest, but this may require a different strategy you can try. Failing to find his way home, Grumpy may actually come to you under the right circumstances. I might try (at dusk or overnight when you can) laying a familiar blanket on the ground under the porch where he would have landed. Sit low to the ground and open some tempting food. Call him softly and wait. It's possible Grumpy will emerge and approach. If that happens, don't make any sudden moves -- wait until he's close enough then pinch his scruff to calm him (escaped cats tend to struggle) and don't let go until he's safely contained. If this doesn't work, and he fails to return, let me know and I will suggest a different approach. Hang in there.

Diana Ellisit was by a hole in the screen. i ran down to the area he jumped to and couldn’t find him. I just really hope he can retrace his steps. i’ll leave food by the door and try to see if he’ll come up.

Emily Rivera, how did he escape the patio -- by a hole in a screen? If so, did he tumble to the ground? Is it even possible for him to retrace his steps? If you can explain the circumstances better I can provide more accurate advice. Most cats attempt to retrace their steps and you don't want Grumpy to find food until he's all the way home. Right now, he is not food motivated -- that's not what he's looking for (he's too scared) -- he wants to find his way back to a safe spot and that what you need to encourage. The food I suggest putting outside the door is only because it usually calms them once they reach their destination, buying you time and the ability to open the door without scaring them away.

the patio doesn’t have a door since i am on the second floor. i left the food where my complex is just at the bottom of the stairs. i thought it might be easier for him to find his way up after eating downstairs he can smell the stuff i left at my door.

Emily Rivera, if he escaped a patio, is there a door from the patio leading outside? I understand your inclination to leave food out for him, but you don't want Grumpy stopping to eat anywhere but home right now -- that could interfere with his return and attract other cats or critters that may intimidate him. A patio makes it easier because you can simply crack open the patio door (if applicable) and place food at the door leading inside (Grumpy should attempt to return the same way he departed) and the food will calm him and hold his attention so you can open the door without scaring him away.

Diana EllisGrumpy escaped from the patio, he is never tempted to go out from there so I believe he may have saw a female cat. But i left some wet food out on the bottom step of my apartment because there is only one set of stairs leading to my apartment and someone else’s on the other side. The wet food was eaten clean out of the bowl and it might be my neighbors cats (but they never really leave her area and she usually keeps them inside, occasionally letting them sit outside) the way the bowl was cleaned makes me think it was a really hungry cat, which could be grumpy.
