Pet Escape There are a few things you can do immediately Not in any order 1. Contact your county animal control and file a report of missing/lost/escaped pet. 2. Contact the chip company and alert them that the animal is missing 3. Document - the actual location of escape, time, date, and circumstances that are unusual 4. DO NOT panic - 95% of pets that are lost and follow these guidelines are reunited with their owners 5. Establish a search plan based on environment, weather, and location… other issues perhaps to consider 6. Do not remove or clean anything connected to the animal… Felines… keep dirty litter box… Canines - if food is left in their bowl… save it… 7. Contact a professional animal SAR… ASAR… There are for hire and those that do it pro bono. 8. Post on any and all network platforms… BUT keep track of where you post, because you need to go back and clear those. Check daily on these platforms, including county shelter 9. Many commercial pet locator applications… use them all 10. All pets will generally not leave an area of 1 kilometer from the residence and often they are within 100 yards. 11. Remember that to them, it is a trauma also… they do not know where they are and are stressed 12. Prepare a recovery plan… better in writing… 13. Do not chase any sighting… never chase an animal… ever 14. The object is for the animal to come to you or in the house 15. If you are going out to search follow these guidelines 1. The best time is dusk and dawn… 1 hour prior to 2. Wear dark clothes and wear dirty (meaning not freshly washed) 3. Carry some high-valued treats… but in the event that you have a sighting… do not throw them at the animal 4. It is all about sightings… so either you or another on a sighting… STOP STOP and be still… picture so that you can confirm it is the right animal 5. Never approach when you see an animal… even your own 6. Make no noise… and if out using a light, shut it off immediately 7. Stand still and very very gently use its name… whisper level 8. Assess the environment in which the sighting occurs 9. Document the sighting, because the odds of a successful reunion start at 95% and go down about 1% per day for the first 14 days 10. DO not give up… many pets are reunited after as long as 60 days 16. Posters are OK, but there is a special way to prepare and post… 1. Never say reward on poster or net platform 2. ONLY things are - LOST PET, NAME, TELEPHONE NUMBER. PIX. DO NOT APPROACH. PLEASE TAKE PHOTO AND CALL 3. Place in locations that are entries to areas… they need to be very very large and at the eye level of someone walking or driving 17. Contact all people walking animals in person and ask them and alert them 18. Alert neighbors… meaning the houses immediately around or in condo/apt, the units in the immediate vicinity 19. Any calls - ask for identifying info that is not published anywhere or viewed in a picture, eg. the color of the collar. 20. Never accept an offer of return for a fee… this is actually illegal 21. Around the house - cats - dirty litter box (against the house, at the location of the door) canines - their bedding or food bowl, WITHOUT food 22. If using food as bait, 1 TEASPOON only… 23. Place bait from the door out in a fan shape to about 30’ 24. If fenced backyard… leave the gates open 25. NO WATER 26. Know the stats - 96 hours plus for food and 48 for water and they will always find water 27. They will never starve 28. Risks are: accident, by another, permanent loss 29. When returned… there are a whole series of things you wish to do… and for that, please refer to the guidelines for a reunited animal 30. Threats - accident, but NOT predation… depending on where there is only a slight threat from air predation… not ground… weather is not a factor… they will find a way to stay warm or cool This is NOT a complete guideline, because there are many variables to consider But you can call a Pet Rescuer… and they can guide you This is NOT proprietary info and can be reproduced at will Second Chance Animal Rescue of Mount Vernon VA 501c3
