Not sure if this will help, but worth a try -
Information to use from a professional Pet Locator:. Prayers your baby is found safe
“Owners scent is particles . Dogs sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 to 100k stronger than human .
I like to refer to a scent article like a campfire . You know when you sit there and the smoke blows into your face then shifts and blows north and then left and right . Well if you hang your scent article up and this occurs , your scent is blowing miles to the left and right and north and etc . So your missing dog with his nose 18 inches off the ground is very confused . So much so that he may very well go In The wrong direction . Most likely really . So we suggest not to hang, but rather a scent article on the ground. Pin it down w a rock .
Then I’m asked well how does a scent tracking dog find a trail . Answer , first he is trained . Second he is trained to determine the strongest concentration of particles in the air and those remaining on the ground .
Lastly , your dogs perspective of surroundings are far different . Lay on the ground lift your head , that’s what he sees . Not very far . A few hundred feet . That’s why he smells every nook and cranny and builds a map of his travels by his nose .
When your dog goes missing in most cases , these are my first words and it’s hard to put this in some cute little box to share ;
You are missing a dog , not a human .
Wet smelly food , water, scent articles, lights on, doors and gates open , speak to all neighbors, flyers in 24 to 48 hours , walk children or buddy dogs (depending), don’t blaze trails , speak in normal tone , never point a flashlight outward but at your feet is ok , don’t sneak around,and don’t let paranoia run the search, don’t panic , most dogs even these recently adopted don’t go far if not spooked or chased .
If you see the dog come back around , sit down don’t use direct eye contact . Coax the dog w treats by making yummy sounds . Lay down and whimper . Don’t make the dog run . Prayers always help .
This is nearly every conversation for eight years . I never found a way to stick this in a cute little box w nice pictures to share to every owner . Not all apply and sometimes there’s other stuff , but this is average . No two cases are the same , no two dogs the same , no two trappers will advise the same , Accept probably my group because we’ve all learned together .”
