If she’s an indoor cat that got out, dhe’s likely scared and hiding behind bushes or in a wooded area. Go out at night with a flashlight that might reflect against her eyes and call her gently. Beyond that, create scent trails on the ground leading to your home (or to a trap, ideally monitored with a trail cam, so you can respond quickly when the cat is in the trap). Get a towel and rub it with your dirty laundry, blankets, socks, or anything else with the scent of home. (Do not use kitty litter.) Tie a rope to the towel and drag the towel from the areas where you think the cat might be, creating scent trails leading to your house (or the trap). You won’t smell the scent on the towel or the ground, but the cat will. (If you use a trap, load it with a little cat food, enough to attract the cat from the trail that leads up to it. Rely on the scent trails to get your cat to the trap.) Rain and snow will wash away the scent trails, so you’ll have to drag again afterwards. Also, it might help to renew the trails every couple days. Important: . Never leave a trap unattended, always keep an eye on it, checking it every 1/2 hour in person or with a trail cam. It should be positioned close to where the cat escaped. . Trail cam photos and videos are marked with time stamps, helpful to know if and when the cat shows up but doesn’t go into the trap. . Post flyers in the area with a picture of your cat and contact information. . Even if you don’t have a trap or a trail cam, scent trails leading to your home can work. This has worked for me and many others. Most helpful for indoor cats who don’t know where “home” is. Dan Montuori developed the method and has a video demonstration on his FB page. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/n7nkfgmMToi4cMRz (Link given is non-commercial. If he/she is an indoor only cat, they usually run to the nearest hiding spot when escaping because they are scared and don’t know what to do. The following suggestions apply to both indoor and outdoor cas. Check under cars, porches, sheds, in garages, and decks. Check yours as well as your neighbors. Put up flyers so neighbors can be aware and look out for your cat. Also look around at night under bushes and in shrubs with a bright flashlight. It may catch on the cats reflective eyes. Looking at night when it's quieter is good they can hear you calling them better. Looking right at dawn is also good because they may peak out of their hiding spot. Put out clothing that smells like you or the cats bed so they know which house is theirs. NOT the litter box because it attracts predators and they will go after or scare your cat away. Put out water for them. You may have to borrow a have a heart trap. Trappers have said Kentucky fried chicken gets them every time or just put sardines. Good luck. Do these things right away timing is important! Also, you can empty the contents of your vacuum cleaner and make a trail in your yard for him, starting where he exited the house. Also, check out Stella Dan Montuori Facebook page, owner of Dog & Drone Search D&D. Watch the pinned video, which explains the drag method he uses to create a scent trail for the cat to find his way home. He has a 90% success rate in locating lost cats. Create scent trails to guide your cat home. Get a towel with your scent or your home’s scent or the scent of any animals in the house. Tie a rope to the towel and drag the towel from the areas where you think the cat might be and create scent trails on the ground leading to your house. This can help the cat find its way home. You won’t smell the scent on the towel or the ground, but the cat will. Dan has found many cats/dogs with this method.
