** Time is of the essence, for finding your lost cat. ** Your cat is probably nearby. Indoor cats usually find a hiding spot very quickly, and very close to where they escaped. Look up in the trees, and check under everything in YOUR YARD first… under decks, bushes, wood piles and sheds. Then check your neighbors yards. The best time to find your cat is at night, with a flashlight, when their eyes glow back at you. ***If your cat is scared, it will not respond to you calling him/her, so you'll have to use your eyes instead of your ears. *** ***When inside cats are suddenly outside, they can go into "survival mode,” and their entire personality changes.*** They, generally, will NOT wander. At least, not at first. (Unless they are not neutered/spayed.) Make sure to leave food and fresh water outside, in case they come out of hiding at night. Canned tuna (packed in oil) is nice and smelly. Also, a piece of your "worn" clothing, with your scent on it left outside, along with their bedding, with their scent on it, will definitely help. And, if you have a container or bag of treats that they really like.. shake it outside for your cat to hear. Also, leave your garage door or a window open a few inches in case it comes back at night. (5-7 inches.) [A special consideration in the cold weather, is to please CHECK UNDER THE HOOD of your vehicle! Oftentimes, a cat, especially an indoor only one, will seek out shelter or warmth in the engine area of your car. Do not start your vehicle, until you’ve checked! Cats tend to stay close to home before they wander so it would be good to focus on a one to two block radius of your location especially at Dawn dusk and feeding time shaking a bag of cat treats or cat food vigorously to help attract your cat's attention. If it's nearby and bring a flashlight with you to help catch a glimpse of its eyes. If it's near. While you're in this area, make sure you check trees shrubbery window wells, especially under decks and porches where cats are often found and ask your neighbors to check their shed and garage where cats are also often found. A worn piece of clothing Also often works well in addition to the piece of clothing I mentioned earlier in your garage placed near the opening. It would also be good to post on neighbor's ring app which covers a three plus mile radius of your location and alerts. Flyers are very important. They are best put in a zip gallon bag that is upside down to protect from the elements. It was just recently that both the dog and a cat were reunited by flyers alone since the people that found the animals did not have social media. If you adopted from a rescue, they usually like to know ASAP that a former animal is missing. If your cat has a microchip, it's good to make sure your contact information is up to date so you can be contacted if your cat is found. Cats tend to stay close to home before they wander so time is of the essence. Make sure your cat is not hiding in the garage in a closet in a dresser, drawer or behind furniture which often happens. I've heard of a few cats returning home the past few years when the owner left their garage open about 5 inches with a worn piece of clothing on the inside of the garage near the opening to help attract the cat if it comes close back to home but not too wide. So you do not attract unwanted animals. It's good if you go check outside on your block around Dawn and dusk with a flashlight looking in shrubbery and under decks and porches to hopefully catch a glimpse of your cat's eyes if it is close by. Usually cats are scared when they first leave home and might not even respond to you. So the flashlight might come in handy to catch a glimpse of the eyes. It's also good to check your local animal control in person daily because things change very often and best in person. It's also good to check local rescues and shelters in your area daily. I hope this helps! ❤️‍🩹 Recommendations for when a kitten goes missing: 1️⃣ The 200-meter (2 yards) rule: A lost cat (if neutered) rarely goes far from the place where it went missing—usually a maximum of 150-200 meters, but typically much closer unless they were scared. If disoriented, an indoor cat will look for another apartment, and an outdoor cat will look for another house. Check parking lots, high trees, basements, or empty houses. They avoid open spaces or large green areas. 2️⃣ The shock state: After getting lost (usually due to a scare), a cat goes into shock. They can stay frozen in the same spot for days without eating or drinking. The cat will NOT respond to anyone except their OWNER. If multiple people call out, the cat might freeze and not even answer its owner. 3️⃣ The best hours: Search between 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM. This is when there is the least amount of street noise, making it easier for the cat to hear you and for you to hear their meows. 4️⃣ Start at the door: Begin right at your front door. Call them the way they are used to (you can shake a bag of kibble). Listen closely. A lost cat won't usually come out; they will only meow to answer you. 5️⃣ Walk slowly: Repeat the call every 20 steps and listen. Cover the area and return the same way, walking slowly. Sometimes a cat won't answer, but they will follow quietly behind you. 6️⃣ Don't give up: Do not stop after just one night. Many owners find their beloved furry friends after a month or even longer. 7️⃣ Check cameras & flyers: Look at security cameras to see which way they went. Post large flyers with cell phones and landlines. Ask neighbors and security guards. CRITICAL: Turn off PRIVACY settings on your Facebook post/page so people can comment and message you. Check your "Message Requests" folder constantly! 8️⃣ The scent trick: If your cat has never been outside, scatter some of their used litter around your home. They will recognize the scent. Also, wear well-worn, unwashed clothes during the search so they can smell and recognize you. 9️⃣ ID tags aren't enough: Unfortunately, collar tags rarely work because a scared adult cat will not let strangers catch them. 🔟 Family/Neighbors: If you suspect someone took the cat away because they didn't like them or have a personal feud with you, try talking to them. If they confess, go look for the cat in the exact place where they were dropped off. 🚨 The most important thing: SPAY/NEUTER YOUR CAT AND KEEP THEM INDOORS. The streets are deadly. Saying "my cat always comes back" is just gambling with their life until they get hit by a car, poisoned, or attacked. 📱 Check all groups: Monitor Facebook groups for lost pets, even outside your local area (sometimes people relocate them). If you see a cat that looks like yours, reach out anyway, even if the listed age/ doesn't match. Ask for videos. Non-experts easily mistake these details.
