Thanks so much for helping the dog. Use the information that fits your situation. You can greatly increase the chances of finding the owner by creating a FOUND dog post and viewing LOST dogs on the sites below. Since the finder/owner has no clue where you've posted, put up as many lost and found posts as possible. Remember a dog can travel many miles a day, so it's important to check areas further away from where found. Follow posts with similar dogs/cats. You may end up finding the owner/finder that way. Keep your post active and seen by others by responding and updating everyone with what's happening. Make sure your notifications are turned on since many will simply leave information on your post and not message you. Petcolove.org/lost/ View these same sites for the owner's lost dog post. *****Inform shelters (ACS if in/near San Antonio) that you have the dog since the owner will likely call there first. They may even have the owner's information already. Put up signs in plastic sheet protectors (opening at the bottom) Check for a microchip at a Vet's office or Petsmart for free. If the chip isn't registered, find out who inserted the chip and they will likely have the name of the person that owns the dog. Even if not chipped, there is likely a family searching for their baby. Before rehoming someone's lost baby, please give the owner the benefit of the doubt and time to locate your posts since they can be difficult to find. Keep in mind that stolen dogs, found dogs, etc. can end up getting dumped, too. Verify ownership. Some will try to claim ownership or offer to watch the dog. Please either hold on to the dog and post or take to a no shelter. If someone offers to foster, make sure the rescue they are using actually takes the dog first. Add date found and zip code/cross streets up in the post since most will not see it in comments. You can become a foster through a rescue. They will cover food and medical needs until the owner is found. If the owner is not located, they will find a family to adopt the dog. If not chipped, please ask for proof of ownership for the dog’s safety, as some people watch these groups to try to get a free cute little dog to sell. Thanks for caring for this sweet dog.

🐾If you haven't already (these are some suggestions, as you may have already done some of these and some suggestions may not pertain to your situation). Can you take to see if the dog has a chip. Any vet, emergency vet, or even some petco or petsmart (if there is a pet hospital there) and fire department might be able to scan (some have scanners). Have them to do a full body scan, as sometimes the chip may have moved. Please walk the neighborhood and see if he belongs to any of your neighbors. Remember not everyone is on social media. Let the postman also know, as he normally knows his folks on his route and may recognize the pup. Please also contact the shelters near you, that is one of the first places a family will go. WHAT TO DO The first place owners go, desperate to find their missing pets, is to the shelters to see if they have been picked up or turned in. Call the local shelters asap to let them know where the pet is and provide your contact information. The shelters will ask you if you want to hold the pet until the owners are found or if you want them to pick it up. You can safely notify the shelter and still hold on to the pet until owners come looking for it, if you want to. Owners may still be out of town! Not uncommon for neighbors & some pet sitters to loose dogs If you live at an Apt complex ask the office mgr to send an email to all tenants, it could be someone that lives there Please ask for proof of ownership. THANKS so much for helping!!🐾 Not everyone is on social media, the dog could belong to a senior. 🦮If dog is wearing rabies tag it can be tracked through the dog info by contacting the Vet or clinic info listed on the tags. Only the place that gave the dog the vaccination can access the owner info by entering the tag numbers on their system. They will then contact the owners directly. *If you find a dog wearing an Apple AirTag, use an iPhone or NFC-capable Android phone to scan it by tapping the top of your phone against the white side of the tag. A notification will appear with the owner's contact info if they marked it as "Lost," allowing you to call them immediately.
