TIPS TO HELP FIND LOST PET:āœ…Place his/her bedding, your shoes, a piece of your unwashed clothing (such as a sweatshirt, blanket, pillowcases) and food/water outside *if there is coyotes in the area bring the food in at night*.🚫Do not put litter box outside. Putting the litter box outside can attract predators and other cats which might keep your cat from returning home🚫*Putting out the other items listed above, are scents only your cat will recognize* ā€¼ļø They might be nearby and can’t figure out how to get inside ***IF you have a garage or door/sliding door that can be left open*** Leave the garage/ or door cracked for them and place the shoes, bedding, jand unwashed clothing in the garageā€¼ļø āœ…Walk around the area calling them calmly early morning and late evening when it’s quiet & shake a bag of treats or a squeaky toy, something they would recognize. āœ…If he/she is microchipped contact the microchip company to report him/her lost and make sure your contact info is up to date. āœ…Hang flyers (use a bright color board or paper) with picture in your neighborhood, surrounding areas, local shopping centers, businesses, vet's offices, groomers, etc. within a five mile radius from your home. āœ…Go door to door with the flyers as well and try to speak with people when handing out flyers. āœ…Make a sign with his/her picture and put it in your front yard stating he/she is missing. āœ…File a lost report with the shelters in your area and surrounding area shelters āœ…Check shelters in person, daily if possible. Ask to see the animals in isolation too. āœ…Check shelter websites daily (as it is updated hourly) āœ…Check shelter found reports for found postings but not at the shelter. āœ…Take a flyer to the shelters. āœ…File online with petharbor, pawboost āœ…Post on area lost and found pet and community Facebook pages, area shelter Facebook pages, newspapers, nextdoor and Craigslist under "pets" and "Lost and Found". Cats usually are close to home. Hang clothes with your scent out. Ask your neighbors if they would look in their yard or garage or storage sheds to see if he is there or check their Ring camera to see if he was spotted on camera. Make sure you post fliers with your contact information on it so if he is spotted they can call you and tell his location. Keep an access point open for him to slip back in your home. Look in bushes or hiding spots around your home as if he is scared he will make himself safe by finding a hiding spot. Sometimes the best time to find your cat is when the noise level is low - after hours - or early morning hours. Take a flashlight and shine and look for the eyes under cars up trees in bushes. Good luck!

I’m so sorry your beautiful cat got outside, but please try not to despair -- Ivy is likely hiding close to her escape route, too frightened to come when called or emerge in the daylight. Most indoor cats will attempt to return on their own, usually within the first few nights if the conditions are just right, so if you know what to expect and how to react, you could have her back inside by morning. I've recovered many escaped cats and have a full set of instructions, but I’ll withhold them for now, hopeful you won’t need them. This is what I suggest you do and when: DURING THE DAYTIME alert nearby neighbors in case Ivy is hiding just beyond your property (under a vehicle, outdoor furniture, shrubs, or in a garage, shed, or carport, etc.), then, if there’s time before dark and you can search SILENTLY without dislodging her from her hiding spot, focus your efforts close to home and tiptoe around in the daylight using a flashlight, but be quiet and discreet so as not to frighten her (shhh! DO NOT CALL or shake treats), check every crack and crevice, look in, under and around sheds, vehicles, furniture, under foundations and porches, into trees etc. but suspend searching when it gets dark to give her the chance to return voluntarily. AT DUSK lay a familiar blanket or worn teeshirt flat on the doorstep where she escaped (DO NOT USE a litter box, bedding, trap or anything obvious -- it's there for scent only to give Ivy the confidence to come out of hiding) along with a bowl of food (to calm her and hold her attention). Call her softly to provide a familiar sound and direction, then watch and listen closely from inside (DO NOT GO BACK OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT!) and if you see Ivy approach and settle on the food be very careful not to startle her as you slowly and quietly provide a clear path back inside. If you can't wait up, set an alarm and watch again just before sunrise -- it's a popular time to return. Please let me know what happens tonight and if she's not back by morning, I'll provide more detailed instructions. Also, although some suggest putting out kitty's litter box, EXPERTS WARN AGAINST IT. I've never used one in all the times I've been successful recovering a lost cat. Please read this to learn more about why it's neither necessary nor recommended: https://www.facebook.com/notes/lost-cats-georgia/why-we-dont-recommend-putting-your-lost-cats-litter-box-outside/1101245526665296/
