the cat was crying and following my partner for a while. when i drove up we gave it some food and then was the cat was next to and then under our car. we were very sad to leave them!

I've found this infographic from Dakin Humane Society in Western Mass helpful to determine if a cat is from the neighborhood or not. I just use a break away collar with a metal tag, instead of the recommended paper one. The MSPCA also has recommendations: https://www.mspca.org/pet_resources/how-the-mspca-can-help-you-find-a-lost-pet/#found. You could also check in with your local animal control officer and rescue groups to see if they know of anyone missing a cat. Good luck!

Take inside or ask someone else who can shelter cat till owner found. Probably close to home. Take a pic & go door to door. Also free vet chip check. Probably was stalking another animal & is discombobulated 🤪
