Lost Cat Recovery Checklist Immediate Actions β–  Start searching close to where she got out (cats usually hide nearby). β–  Check high & low hiding spots: under cars, porches/decks, shrubs, garages, sheds. β–  Ask neighbors to check open garages/sheds and closed spaces before shutting doors. Best Times to Search β–  Search during quiet/dark hours (best: 12am–7am, especially 1–6am). β–  Use a strong flashlight at night to spot eye reflection. Calling & Approaching β–  Call for her during still hours (overnight/early morning). β–  If you see her: stay calm and quiet (don’t chase). Scent Lures (Safe Options) β–  Put outside: her bed/blanket or your unwashed clothing/bedding. β–  Place scent items near the trap and/or leading toward the door. β–  Do NOT place a litter box outside (can attract predators such as coyotes). Food / Feeding Station β–  Set up a feeding station and feed during the day only. β–  Do NOT leave food out overnight (attracts wildlife & scares cats off). Humane Trap (Highly Recommended) β–  Get a live/humane trap ASAP. β–  Use food only inside the trap (don’t leave food elsewhere). β–  Cover trap with a tarp/blanket for safety and comfort. β–  Check trap frequentlyβ€”never leave it unattended overnight. β–  In harsh weather: check every 30 minutes. Outreach (Very Important) β–  Post flyers around the neighborhood with phone number (day/night contact). β–  Bring flyers to local vets, shelters (go in person every few days if possible), and pet stores. β–  Tell your mail carrier (they notice roaming pets). β–  Ask known stray feeders/rescuers if they’ve seen her. Mindset β–  Keep checking at different times daily. β–  Don’t give upβ€”cats can be found weeks or months later

I am not an expert, but after ours went briefly missing I have a few tips to share. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Look in storm drains. Bend down and look, dont assume they can hear you calling for them. Even if you are next to it calling out, they may not hear. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Walk the surrounding areas during quite times of the day, especially in late at night and early mornings. Take treats to shake or cans of food to tap. Cats are most likely to be active and venturing out of hiding during those times. Cats are naturally more active during dusk and dawn, and may be less likely to be seen during the day. Additionally, many cats will attempt to return home within the first week, often in the middle of the night. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Don't put out their litter, but do put out a load of your laundry. Your baby knows your scent. Litter might attract territorial aggressive strays or ferals that might fight or chase away your baby. They won't care about your laundry though. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Tell your neighbors. Ask the delivery people, garbage & recycling people to keep an eye out. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Notify the microchip company and make sure they are still in their system πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Use free online sources like Canva to make flyers to put up. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Contact the local shelters to alert them. They will check the pets that came in and will be on the look out for yours when new ones come in. They also have resources/suggestions, and can loan you traps. **if you use a trap, check it often as raccoons will injure trapped cats. Do not leave it alone over night. ⚠️ Set your alarm to wake up to check it πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Contact the vets in the surrounding area. Someone might take your pet in to see if they have a chip. Leave your info with them just in case someone does. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈReach out to local rescues to alert them. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Register them on websites like Petco Lost Love and PawBoost. One will create a flyer for you to print out and both can be used to share on social media. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Check out websites like 24PetConnection , nextdoor neighbors, and the shelters periodically to see if they have been listed as found. πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ”οΈ Don't give up.
