Since most lost pet cases are solved in the neighborhood where the pet went missing, nearby neighbors matter more than a large Facebook group. This is why using the neighborhood apps Next door has close to a 75% return rate. Neighbors by Ring has close to a 69% return rate. Flyers are important as well. But the apps should be first because you get a post up in 5 minutes and reach 50 people. Flyers take time to put up. People often assume that posting about a missing pet in a large community Facebook group means 1000’s of people are actively searching. Not so. Imagine a city Facebook group with 24,000 members. The city is roughly 5–6 miles east to west and 5–6 miles north to south. The people who like animals are too spread out across the City to actually see your pet in real life. Also, when it is 115° degrees outside in Arizona, the chance that people will walk around outside to search on foot for a lost pet drops very close to zero. It's estimated that only about 5% of the immediate neighbors will actually look outside. And they will NOT walk the neighborhood, more like simply glance under their vehicle porch or bushes while walking from their air conditioned house to their air conditioned car. That's the reality during extreme heat. People just aren't going to walk sidewalks, check bushes, or conduct neighborhood searches when it's 115°F. So it's very important that owners post on the two apps and get Flyers up asap.

Bounty/Reward Flyer (With AMOUNT!) ✅ Best for: opportunists, people who have or saw the pet but didn’t act ✅ Goal: Motivate action from people who need a reason (money) to do the right thing ✅ Effective design: "$2-500 REWARD with the amount as the biggest text NOT LOST DOG NOT HAVE YOU SEEN ME Pet photo Large contact info ✅ Works because: What's in it for them.. It turns a flyer into a cash incentive.

LOW INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS Most lost pet instructions point about 80% of owners with a lost pet in the wrong direction in the first 48 hours by telling them: ▪️Update your microchip ▪️Call the shelter ▪️Contact your veterinarian ▪️Put dirty laundry outside. ▪️Get flyers up. (If your pet is lost in a low income neighborhood read this. If not skip ahead.) However something to consider Low income areas have the HIGHEST RATE OF: ▪️Lost pets running the streets. ▪️Finders keepers. (If it's free it's for me). ▪️Owners that do little to search for their pet. ▪️Owners that do not go get their pet from the County shelter. ▪️Owners that do not take their pet to a vet. ▪️ Pets that are intact. Not spayed or neutered. Low income areas also have THE LOWEST RATE OF: ▪️Microchipped pets. Guesstimated around 3%- 7%, if even? ▪️Dogs with a collar and tags on. So we have the HIGHEST rate of lost pets, In neighborhoods where they are LEAST likely to have a microchip or a vet. So that information is NOT helpful. Many of these are the dogs that end up at the County shelter on the euthanasia list. 13 year Lost Pet Advocate and Lost Pet strategist It's because they work like an amber alert. They cover the immediate vicinity and Get the word out to multiple people at once. The people most likely to see the dog in real life. Next door has around a 75% return rate. Neighbors by ring has around a 69% return rate. Flyers have around a 7 to 21% return rate. This is because there are about 10 steps involved for a flyer to be effective. However all 3 of these are the top methods because they: Reach the immediate vicinity. Immediately They reach the people most likely to see the pet. They reach many people at once in the target area.

Go to the shelters to see if your dog/cat is there, if not Get your flyers up! Do not rely on social media alone, most of my missing animals come home, because of physical flyers! I do 8X11 in the immediate area 4 per block, the bigger the area 3 per block and so on. I've had the most success with the 4 per page mini handouts of the same flyer. I will give these to the Mailman, UPS, Fedex, Garbage man, Gas stations, Grocery stores. Also fluorescent backgrounds at major intersections 8X11 or bigger. Also law enforcement and animal control. More than likely, it's not going to be your eyeballs.That bring your pet home.Also not everybody has social media. So we need as much help as we can get from the community. So make it easy for them to get a hold of you. and remember the harder you work, the luckier you get! I hope these suggestions help you get your animal home soon and safe. 🙏
