IMPORTANT ----->>> IMMEDIATELY CHECK ALL SMALL SPACES!! Under houses, in sheds, in culverts, wells, every small space! Go to the shelter IN PERSON, at least every other day. They are required to hold strays for only 3 days if there is no chip. Print flyers, and give to the mail carrier, sanitation workers, vet clinics, shelters, and post at public places, like groc stores. IMMEDIATELY cut several smelly socks into strips and hang everywhere outside. Lost dog experts also highly recommend putting the dog's bedding outside. Also, highly recommend posting to as many lost pet sites as possible. Here are some, starting with the best: HELPINGLOSTPETS.COM, FIDOFINDER.COM, PETAMBERALERT.COM, CRITTERALERT.COM, LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM,, PAWMAW.COM Helping Lost Pets (HeLP) HELPINGLOSTPETS.COM VERY IMPORTANT!!! Post to NEXTDOOR.COM & CRAIGSLIST.COM - many reunited in these free sites. USE HASHTAGS - ex: #dachshund #chihuahua #chiweenie, etc. It will increase the odds of a reunion. Put large neon posters at intersections, with only the word 'LOST', a brief description if there is no photo, and a contact phone #. NO MORE THAN THAT, or people will not bother to read as they are driving by.

Here's a few suggestions that might help. As soon as your dog has gone missing- Start looking for it right away. As long as you can. Focus your search during times when your neighborhood or communities are quieter- dusk and dawn. If you have another dog you might take it with you. They might pick up one another’s scent and help coax it out of hiding. **Put a piece of clothing outside that would have your scent on it, such as a soiled sock perhaps. Leave food outside on your porch and check frequently. Be sure to check under porches, garages( leave your garage door open a little with food inside), sheds, window wells, ditches, etc. Never assume the dog will come to you. While searching the last known area, shake their food dish or a bag, such as a chip bag. Call animal control and file a missing report at the shelter with pic. Pass out flyers to all veterinarians. KEEP IN MIND that not everyone is on Facebook. Text your neighbors and friends and asked them to share. Notify microchip company. Post on all local sites with phone contact and location. Posters are a must. SOCIAL MEDIA! Post on all Lost and Found sites, Shop and Sell sites and Craigslist. Follow up on all leads! Ask caller what direction it was traveling. Focus on areas that have food and water sources. Fast food restaurants seem to be a magnet for them. Post flyers on community bulletin boards and distribute them to neighbor's, postal carriers and utility personal, and bus drivers. It's also a good idea to place an ad under Lost and Found in your local newspaper for those that aren't on social media. Hang large NEON colorful posters w/picture and large contact information which can be seen from a car. Keep in mind not everyone is on Facebook and sightings are very important in order to find your dog. REMEMBER: Do NOT CHASE or CALL a frightened dog! Even your own lost dog. When you sight the dog, do not run towards the dog. Get on the ground appear small and less threatening. If you can, sit or lay on the ground and make baby crying sounds. Do not look at the dog. If you have treats (chopped hot dogs, or canned cat food) slowly toss pieces to it. Give the dog time to feel safe. When the dog comes to you, do not grab. Have a slip collar ready., Keep in mind, if the dog has been missing for awhile he may not even feel comfortable with its owner. So go slowly. ◦
