Hopefully, the finder sees this: In Florida, pets are legally classified as personal property. You cannot legally keep a found stray dog or cat as your own without making a good-faith effort to find the owner. Failing to report the animal or intentionally keeping it without notification can be treated as theft by finding.Your Legal ResponsibilitiesReport the animal: You must notify your local county animal services department or local animal control agency about the found pet.Scan for a microchip: Take the pet to a local veterinarian or animal shelter to get scanned for a microchip within 72 hours.Contact the owner: If a microchip is found, you are required to try contacting the registered owner within 24 hours.Make reasonable search efforts: Post on local lost-and-found pet networks, social media groups, and check with nearby shelters.Hold or surrender: You can typically house the pet temporarily while searching for the owner, but you must turn the animal over to local animal services if requested or if the statutory stray hold period expires and you haven't gone through official formal adoption/foster channels.
