If you have something that he sleeps on or in put it near the back door. I've heard that if they are within a mile they will smell it and come home. Also helps to put his litter box out there

If chipped make sure owner contact info is current with chip company. File online lost reports with shelters. Put something outside with the kitty's scent on it and call the cat's name at night when quiet and shake food container. Keep checking shelters online and in person.
