Message from Owner

Hello! Roci never came back last night and is still missing. She only has three legs so we are very worried that she won't make it long on her own. She is easily spooked but doesn't run far. Thank you very much!

Put her litter box outside. A cat can smell it from a kilometre away and if she smells it it will guide her home.

Maria Lyubchenko The key is to start your search as soon as you realize your cat is missing. They're likely not too far from home (3 to 4 houses) but if they go out regularly, you'll have to search a wider area (3 block radius). Put your cat's blanket, bed, etc, outside by the door he/she got out of (no litterbox, it’ll attract predators). List your cat on helpinglostpets.com and any other social media Lost Pet sites specific to your area. Put up posters on nearby telephone poles, posts and mailboxes, and tuck flyers into door handles, etc. Posting flyers is one of the best known and most effective methods of getting your lost cat back. Be specific with the info on your poster. Check under cars, hedges, stairs, decks, etc and ask neighbours if you can check their backyards (you'll look harder for your cat than they will and your cat will know your voice). Ask neighbours to also check their garages, sheds since your cat may have gotten closed in somewhere. Look up as well as under (he/she may be up a tree). When lost, cats will generally find a place to hide (small, dark places) and often will stay quiet and not come even if they recognize your voice. Go out at night with a flashlight and a bag of treats and look for "eye shine". If you see your cat, approach slowly, quietly and lure him/her to you. Your cat may not readily come (remember, they’re scared) and you don't want to spook him/her into running. If your cat's microchipped, check to make sure that the info attached to the chip is up to date (24 Pet Watch: 1-866-375-7387). Please call Hamilton Animal Services (905-574-3433) to determine if your cat has been picked up; call regularly. You can also file a Lost Report on their website, as well as view Found Pets. (https://www.hamilton.ca/animals-pets/lost-found-or-surrender). Don't give up, cats can take a couple of weeks to come home (or longer). It takes a village to get your lost cat home. Using the tips posted above, and having the help of your community, gives you the best chance of getting your fur-baby home.

Maria Lyubchenko ...Will share but go out every evening and call out her name. Someone recently so did that on bikes every night and her daughter spotted their cat after 11 days, then the cat ran to them when he recognized her voice? Apparently cats will hide more in the day and venture out at night. Good Luck!
