Older Black cat possibly wearing a green collar

Name unknown. Cat followed my son in September and we were letting it in and out while we found its family. By the time we received confirmation that the cat had been abandoned.. it never came back. We’re heartbroken and would like to find out if it was taken in by a neighbor or still needs a . Cat may or may not be wearing a green collar my son purchased from Walmart. Photo shows cat without the collar. Fur is soft but feels like a caterpillar or like a crew cut growing out. Cat is older, sweet and kind. We’d like to find it and take it to the vet and get it settled in our before the real snow kicks in. We had a lead in early October that someone took the cat in and then our messages were ignored. Without confirmation we are continuing our search. My son is heartbroken and is still looking for his friend. If you have any news (even if someone else took the cat in and they are keeping it) please let us know. We’d like to sleep.
