Can you bring him inside, put him in a separate room, maybe a bathroom with food, water and a litter box, and a box with a towel in it

Ask neighbors if he's their's. Put up flyers in the area,or neighborhood where the cat was found. Pawboost, LostMyKitty, PetcoLoveLost, all24PETCONNECT all offer free flyers for download, this flyer and many others are available on Canva.com

If it’s possible it would be great if you could bring this cat inside if you haven’t already, it’s not safe outside. So if the cat is lost put up posters within a two block area including behind you with all the information. If someone contacts you saying it’s their cat make them prove it by showing photos in their phone or a vet bill. You can also try cross-referencing this site and other lost pet sites to see if anyone has lost a cat that looks like that cat. They make filters to make your search parameters easier to do. There’s an equally good chance your cat was dumped by some owner who had to move. Who’s getting married or having a baby or going into assisted living or any number of excuses. If that’s the case you will not get anyone calling for their pet. First bring the cat to a vet or Petco or Petsmart for a free check for a microchip. Hopefully he’s chipped and you can contact the owner and happy ending however it’s just as likely he either doesn’t have a chip or the people never register the chip or they’re not responding because they dumped the cat. People are horrible. If no one steps up to claim him please go to your friends family and coworkers first to find a new home for him. Insists on him being an indoor cat that’s how he got this way in the first place. If you end up having to put them up for adoption make sure you vet all adapters carefully insist on a $75 minimum rehoming fee and do not under any circumstances just hand the cat over in the driveway of your house, you need to deliver them and do a home check. If they object to these two requirements then they have ill intent and you should just avoid them. People use cats as bait and dog fights and kittens to feed snakes people are horrible. In the meantime thank you for looking out for this guy especially in bad weather he needs an advocate for food and water And hopefully a safe place to be. Thank you again.
