Julian Lopez, I'd stay inside after dark -- you want to give Eva as much opportunity as possible to return, but she's unlikely to try if anyone is outside. Please don't panic. Crack the gate open and place food at the door where she would usually enter the house and she should return when it's quiet and still. Hang in there.

Diana Ellis okay thank you so much for your help and i hope to continue to hear from you. We just came back from walking around with a flashlight to see if we got lucky. It’s been very hard on us. She has a microchip so it calms us down a bit but we still hope that she’s okay.

Julian Lopez, I'm only now seeing your reply -- I would only place food in front of the door -- it's there to calm her and hold her attention so you can open the door without scaring her away (she may be jittery after this adventure). If you place food elsewhere she may stop and you don't want any distractions as she heads for the door. Please keep me updated.

Diana Ellis yes first time. The patio is fenced so she has never experienced anything beyond the gate. It’s our backyard but has fences and she likes to roam around the fences but this is the first time ever that she left. Would you recommend putting food at the gate that opens into the backyard/side of the house?

Julian Lopez, would this be the first time Eva escaped the patio (is it screened, or does she stay within a fenced area beyond the patio)? It's important to know if Eva has experience outside the "patio gate." If not, crack the gate open at dusk and place food at the door where she would usually enter the home (don't leave food out during the daytime -- Eva would be scared if she's never been beyond the gate so she'll only return after dark). If there's more you can tell me about whether Eva has ever left the immediate area before now, that can influence how to proceed.

Diana Ellis thank you so much for your extensive message. She is an indoor cat but loves to be outside. We have a patio in the back so she loves to go outside and receive sun. Yesterday at around 9-10 am we went to open the door for her, as she usually stands by the door waiting to be let in, and she didn’t come in. She may have creeped under our patio gate. For the moment we have left a plate of food outside with her blanket in the front of our door which also aligns with our ring camera for any movement. It’s been 24 hours so any suggestions are super appreciated and helpful thank you!

Julian Lopez, before you decide how to go about recovering your beautiful Eva, it's important to consider her familiarity with the environment -- is she an indoor cat or allowed outside? Escaped indoor cats usually hide close by but are too frightened to return or respond when called; while a cat that knows her way around may have become stuck somewhere and needs help getting home. I have recovered many lost cats and assisted others so if you tell me about Eva I can provide complete instructions that may help. Please understand an indoor cat will be fearful and hide close to home so if you search, tiptoe SILENTLY during during the DAYTIME ONLY (no calling or shaking treats) or do just the right things and she may emerge when it's dark and quiet to sneak back inside. This usually happens within the first few nights so until I hear back from you please implement this strategy if Eva got out accidentally: tonight (AT DUSK) place something inconuous but comforting and familiar on the doorstep where she got out (blanket or worn teeshirt laid flat -- DO NOT USE a litter box, bed, trap, or anything conuous) along with a bowl of food. Call her softly to provide a familiar sound and direction (she won't come on command) then watch from inside (DO NOT GO BACK OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT!) and if you see Eva approach and settle on the food be careful not to startle her. Slowly and quietly provide a clear path inside and she may put an end to the crisis herself. If you can't wait up set an alarm and watch again just before sunrise -- it's a popular time. Also, although some will suggest putting out kitty's litter box, experts say DON’T DO IT. I've never used one in all the times I've been successful recovering a lost cat.
