If you see this dog and have time, treats and a leash. Let the dog see you SIT OR LAY DOWN, and using a soft voice, coax him. Do NOT GET UP UNTIL the dog is secured.

Check for chip. Have potential owner show proof of ownership, giving identifying information including vet records, pictures, etc. Please be very careful. There are some bad people out there who will try to fool you. They love animals for breeding, ransom or for sadistic purposes such as bait in dog fighting rings (yes, they do sadly exist), target practice, torture. A “free animal” is an easy target. PLEASE be very careful if you cannot contain. Do not just give to anyone who may convince you will take care of.

Do NOT Chase! May move further away and possibly into traffic. Too many dogs are hit in traffic by well meaning people. Contact owner with sightings.

Ask for detailed proof of ownership such as pictures and vet records which are clear and current and up to date.
