***I Found a Roaming Cat*** Thank you for posting in case this is a lost cat. If you’ve come across a cat outside that’s unfamiliar to you, it might be lost, but it could also be a free-roaming pet or part of a community cat colony. Here’s how you can assess the situation: **Observe the Cat’s Behavior**: A lost cat might seem disoriented, scared, or vocal. It could also be thin, dirty, or injured and may need help. However, if the cat appears calm, healthy, and well-groomed, it could just be exploring. **Check for Identification**: Look for a collar or ID tag with contact information. If the cat has one, it’s likely a pet and not lost. **Scan for a Microchip**: If the cat doesn’t have visible ID, you can have it scanned for a microchip at a local vet (emergency vets are open 24/7), pet store, shelter, or one of the shelter’s Microchip Checkpoint Partners across Mecklenburg County (see link below). You can also call 311 to request an officer to come to your home to scan the cat for a microchip. (https://www.charlottenc.gov/cmpd/Animal-Care-and-Control/LostFound/Microchipping) **Ask Around**: Talk to your neighbors or post about the found cat in local online community groups like Facebook, Nextdoor, or the Neighbors app to see if anyone recognizes it. Here are some Facebook pages where you can also post clear photos or videos of the cat: - Charlotte, NC. It's possible that it belongs to someone who isn't active on social media, or perhaps the owners are unaware of the online lost-and-found communities. The cat might have been an indoor/outdoor cat, which means the owners may not be too concerned if it disappears for short periods. However, most cats tend to stay within a relatively small radius of their home, so putting up flyers nearby can greatly increase the chances of reuniting it with its family. Be sure to include a clear photo, the cat’s description, and your contact information to make it easier for the owners to identify and reach out. IMPORTANT NOTE: Not all found cats are abandoned; many are simply lost, even if they’ve been missing for months or appear malnourished. Cats can become disoriented and unable to find their way back home. Just because a cat looks neglected doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an owner searching for it. You cannot simply “rehome” a cat because you found it—that’s not legal. It’s important to follow the proper steps to ensure the rightful owner has a chance to reclaim their pet. SPECIAL NOTE: Please exercise extreme caution when someone claims that the “found” cat you're posting about belongs to them. Unfortunately, there are individuals who can be both deceitful and highly manipulative, and they may go to great lengths to acquire animals for harmful purposes. Cats, in particular, can be targeted by those involved in illegal activities, such as baiting for dogfighting rings. It’s important to thoroughly verify any claims before releasing the animal to ensure their safety. I have personally seen scammers on lost and found sites use AI to alter photos of “found” animals so they can falsely claim they have pictures of a lost pet. **Report as "Found"**: File a "Found Pet Report" with Animal Care & Control in case someone is searching for the cat. You can do this online (link below) or by calling 311 to make a report. (https://www.charlottenc.gov/cmpd/Animal-Care-and-Control/LostFound/I-Found-a-Roaming-Pet) Thank you for caring!!!
