Best order to try if someone found a tortoise in Las Vegas: Tortoise Group – 702-739-7113 Post on Nextdoor / neighborhood Facebook groups Put up local flyers (many tortoises escape yards) Contact Clark County Desert Tortoise Assistance Line (702-593-9027) if it may be a wild tortoise

1. Tortoise Group (Southern Nevada / Las Vegas) This is the main organization people contact if they find a tortoise in Las Vegas. 📞 Hotline: 702-739-7113 Nonprofit focused on rescue, education, and rehoming desert tortoises. They also run the official adoption program for captive desert tortoises in Southern Nevada. What they can help with: Advice if you found a tortoise Lost-and-found listings Registering a tortoise if no owner is found Adoption / rehoming information Important: Because there are many displaced tortoises in Las Vegas, they don’t always take animals directly anymore and often help locate owners or new custodians instead.

If you found a tortoise in Las Vegas, Nevada, what you should do depends on where it was found: Steps: Ask nearby neighbors if it belongs to them. Post in local lost-pet groups or apps (Nextdoor, Facebook). Check for a microchip at a vet (many vets will scan for free). Report it to Tortoise Group at 702-739-7113. Important: Do NOT release it into the desert. Pet tortoises can spread disease to wild populations and usually cannot survive there. 2. If it was in the open desert It may be a wild Mojave desert tortoise, which is federally protected. Leave it alone unless it’s in immediate danger (like on a road). If necessary, move it only a few yards in the direction it was walking. You can call the Clark County Wild Desert Tortoise Assistance Line: 702-593-9027. 3. Temporary care (if you picked it up) Keep it in a secure box or room indoors. Offer kale, dandelion greens, or tortoise food. Provide a shallow dish of lukewarm water (they cannot swim). ✅ There are 150,000+ pet tortoises in the Las Vegas valley, so finding one wandering in a yard is fairly common.
