Be sure to notify the local police department, dog warden/pound, and humane society. Print out neon signs with your dog’s picture on it, its name and your phone number, and staple it to the telephone poles around all intersections where your dog was lost. Not everyone has Facebook so signs are key for sightings. Also, hang them at any store, bank, library etc. in the area and be sure to ask the mail carriers in your area to be on the lookout/give them a flyer, as well. Put something with your scent on it (dirty socks/blankets/clothing) and your dog’s bed/bedding, outside of your house. Scent is key, dogs can use scent to find their way back home. You may also want to look into a Pet Recovery service, they are extremely helpful.
From a professional rescue page I follow:
If your dog gets away from you time is of the essence. Start with these steps to get your dog home.
-Walk or drive the area and try to spot your dog.
-If you see your dog and he won’t come to you, follow him unobtrusively.
-Do not run toward, clap your hands, or yell out to him. This may frighten the dog and drive him out into traffic.
-Have high value treats with you; (i.e. hot dogs, hamburger, cheese, etc.) The best treats to use are ones that smell good and are of a size that you can toss in the dog’s direction.
-Place at the last place that the dog was seen, if it is a safe place.
-Post on social media:NextDoor, Facebook, or your local lost pet site. Include a picture of the dog, the area the dog went missing in, your phone number, and instructions to not chase the dog!
-Make fluorescent posters and distribute them throughout the area where the dog was last seen.
-If the dog went missing from home, place some of your dirty clothes around the outside of your house.
-Contact your local police and humane society.Read More
