My sister found this dog roaming the street alone, panting, and crying. She feared he would get run over so she brought him home. She has two dogs and a cat and could not keep him with her so I picked him up and he’s now in Alexandria. I will travel for a week and can’t keep him until his owner is found. Please share this message with your networks. He misses his family.

Claire, incorrect. Excluding New Carrolton, you only have to file a found report within 48-72 hours. The dog can be kept safe and out of the shelter at a minimum for the duration of the strayhold period provided the finder makes public efforts to locate the owner. I appreciate your thought and concern, though.

A found dog report including a picture should be filed with the closest public shelter to where the dog was found. Her sister should ask a trusted friend or neighbor in the area to foster the dog, and put up posters throughout the neighborhood and beyond. If the dog must be taken to a shelter it should be one in Maryland.

Pls have a vet check for a microchip. Its free. Pls file a found report with the shelter in the city he was found. Thats where most owners report their lost dog. And if you can't keep the dog, pls take him to the shelter where he was lost. Not Alexandria.

I hope they make a found report to the local shelter in Camp Springs, Md. so the owners will know if they’ve contacted the shelter. This is a problem to take a found dog out of the area it lives in. Hope it gets back home.
