FIGHT OR FLIGHT
Dogs start with a fight or flight mode. DO NOT CHASE. Usually 24 hours. Usually after this they calm down and will LOOP the area.
DO NOT CHASE, otherwise they go back into flight mode.
CALMING SIGNALS
If in flight mode, do not look directly at them
Get down low
When attempting to contain a panicked or lost dog, rescuers use specific body language to appear non-threatening: [1, 2]
* Avoid Direct Eye Contact: Staring is a threat; instead, look at the ground or use your phone's camera to monitor the dog indirectly.
* Walking in a Curve: Never approach a fearful dog head-on. Walk in a wide spiral or at a \(45\)-degree angle to show peaceful intentions.
* Sitting or Lying Down: Lowering your body size makes you appear smaller and less intimidating.
* Yawning and Lip Licking: Humans can mirror these natural dog signals to communicate that they are not a threat.
* Tossing Treats: Toss high-value, "stinky" treats (like hot dogs or chicken) to the side or behind you rather than directly at the dog.
