After 15 days on the run- running all over Putnam and Dutchess county- Tashi is finally SAFE! Tashi is a trained/working livestock guardian who left her home in Carmel, NY on 6/22/26. She was first spotted running up and down the Taconic State Parkway two days later. Many people tried to catch her which just caused her to run away. For the next two weeks, her owners tracked her through sightings all over Putnam and Dutchess County. Anytime someone saw her in person, that person would try to catch her which just caused her to run further and which made it impossible for her to settle so she could be safely recovered. Tashi would run miles each day - it didn’t even seem like she was stopping to sleep! Finally, just before the holiday weekend, it seemed like she had finally settled in Pawling and the owners prepared to have a professional trap her as necessary. However, when the storm ripped through Pawling on Saturday 7/4/26, it caused massive power outages and a huge fire that destroyed two buildings right where Tashi had last been seen. With most residents without WiFi/internet, the sightings stopped but we were still hopeful she had found someplace safe to settle in Pawling. Fast forward to today, someone posted about a dog who had been coming back to their house since Saturday evening to sleep on their porch. They had left food out for the dog, but otherwise left the dog alone. Tashi’s owners made contact with the property owners, and the property owners gated their porch to secure her. Tashi’s owners arrived shortly thereafter and safely recovered Tashi. She’s lost weight and was exhausted so by the time her owners got there, she was more than ready to end her adventure and come home! She is on her way to the vet now with her owners. This is a reminder that dogs are capable of surviving- even over the course of weeks- even through a heat wave and a terrible storm- even after running for hundreds of miles. It’s also a reminder that when a dog is in survival mode, don’t chase them or call out to them, because it only makes them run further and it prevents them from settling in an area to be safely recovered. Thank you to everyone who shared her story and helped her come home!
