Here are some ideas that may help... - Knock on all neighbors’ doors & give flyers with info. Also provide flyers to mail carriers, trash collection, Fed Ex, UPS, Amazon drivers. - The best way to get the message out there is to HANG FLYERS ASAP to get sightings!! Saturate the area where lost, post a posterboard sign in front of your house, place flyers ON (not in) mailboxes, stop signs, your car, and if allowed, other cars/local stores/gas stations/veterinarian offices). This is a good idea in case someone finds pup locally, as not everyone uses the internet. - KEEP FLYERS SIMPLE AND EASY TO SEE/READ!! Neon paper is eye catching. Include picture, brief description, location lost (town and cross streets), when lost and easy to reach you contact information &, phone number. Write MISSING DOG in large BOLD LETTERS at top!! Cover with plastic sleeves for weather... - Post a picture and detailed information on the internet to various local Lost & Found sites and the SPCA sites, Rescues, closest Police and Township sites, Pawboost or nextdoor .com. - FYI: If using Private Message as contact, check your OTHER MESSAGE FOLDER frequently...if someone not on your friends list messages you, it will go there and NOT give you a notification! - Besides the norm…notify the police, animal control, local vets, shelters, neighbors, SPCA's. That’s where someone who finds a pet will call first. - Check all SPCA's/Humane Societies in the area and make a LOST DOG REPORT (also including the different counties in the surrounding area) as you never know where someone lives and will take a pup. Also check the SPCA’s and shelters frequently in person…Calling is NOT enough! - Please NOTE: Pictures and descriptions are deceiving and can be interpreted differently from person to person, i.e., lighting can make the coloring of a pet look different in a picture. A description of a brown dog can be interpreted as tan, black, or even reddish depending on the person describing the animal. - Depending on location missing...Some local organizations to help with advice or trap etc. In PA, we have TEAM-RUBY K911-Lost Dog Search Rescue, Inc., Chester & Montgomery County Pet Search, Team Louie Animal Rescue, Hound Hunters, Berks Dog Search, BuxMont LOST & FOUND PETS (Bucks and Montgomery Counties), etc. Also, you can do a FB search to find other local rescue groups to help. - Try googling drone services near your area. - If your pup has a MICROCHIP---CONTACT the microchip company to verify that the contact/owner information is up to date and to report your dog is missing. Updating/Changing info can be done at any time by phone or online depending on company! To make sure you have the best chance for recovering your pet, you can register the microchip on other free microchip sites . - Place an Ad in the local newspapers (sometimes this is free). - OFFER a Reward to entice people to help find your pup! - Dogs also take the paths of least resistance, such as following fence lines, paths. roads, tree lines, etc. Check in and under sheds, cars, crawlspaces, check in your garage, neighbor’s garage, yard, anywhere pup can hide and feel safe! - Dogs usually come out at dusk, late night and early morning hours. Use a flashlight to check at night to catch reflection of eyes under sheds, in woods, etc. - SMALLER dogs usually do not go too far from where they go missing and tend to hide! And they also take the paths of least resistance…such as following fence lines, paths. roads, tree lines etc. People are more apt to pick up a loose small pup. - LARGER dogs can travel pretty far (i.e., 10+ miles away). For larger dogs, call all the police depts., vets, shelters in the SURROUNDING towns, cities, counties. - Put pup's bedding outside, SMELLY food, things with your/pup's scent around your property or in area lost (find a safe location). For example: hang old blankets and dirty laundry in the bushes/trees on your property or surrounding properties (if allowed). - COOK SMELLY FOOD like hotdogs, bacon, sausages on your grill so the smell travels around the area (helps to lure them home). - If you have a garage, leave the door propped open with bedding, food and water. - Place a driveway alarm outside your house so if pup comes back at night while you’re in bed...it will alert you. - DRONE SERVICES for pet retrieval use thermal cameras to detect animals' heat signatures, allowing for the rapid scanning of large areas, including dense terrain, even at night. These services provide real-time footage and can quickly locate a missing pet, with assistance for the safe recovery of the animal once found. You can find providers by searching online for terms like "thermal drone pet recovery" or looking for local pet search and rescue organizations that utilize drones. - Just an FYI: If you see a lost dog---PLEASE DO NOT CHASE! The dog will run farther away from the area! Contact pup’s owner immediately. If a dog is in flight mode...the best way to catch them is with a trap placed in a safe, undisclosed location near last known sighting. - THE KEY IS TO CHECK EVERY FEASIBLE LEAD – YOU NEVER KNOW! - Good luck and I pray that pup is found soon!
