WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FIND A PET
1. If it’s a dog, call the local dog control officer or if there isn’t one, the police department, (non emergency number) If the owner is searching, they will most likely call those places to report him as lost. Either dog or cat report to the local SPCA.
2. Take him to a veterinarian or shelter to be scanned for a chip. They will do that for free and you don’t need an appointment.
3. Make a flyer with just 3 things:
* FOUND
* PICTURE OF PET
* PHONE NUMBER
4. Post flyers around the area where you found him.
5. Post the info on social media
6. When somebody calls, have them prove ownership by providing vet records or pictures of the pet in their home.
7. Have them provide details that you have omitted.
8. If you think it may be an indoor/outdoor cat, you could put a paper collar on with your # asking if it’s someone’s inside/outside cat.
9. Please provide food/water/shelter if not turning over to animal control or a rescue-please do not give away or decide that the animal is yours to keep right away-by law, authorities must be notified and owners must be searched for.Read More
