You or someone in your family must have left the door or window open and weren't paying attention, so it sounds like your fault he's missing. I hope he's neutered because you're screwed if he isn't. He will roam far away and get lost. Was he microchipped or wearing a collar with an ID tag on him? The best thing you can do is get a cat trap from animal control and set it out by your house asap. He is going to be very afraid and hiding near your home.
