Message from Owner

This kitty is the best thing in the world to our family. He is friendly, loving, overweight, and has never been outside. Got scared due to recent storms and was staying at our mother’s hse while we were out of town. Escaped screened in porch early this morning.

Search when it’s dark, using a flashlight to look under bushes and in trees. Indoor cats that get out are usually hiding very close by

Cats have an innate ability to "home", no matter the distance, and even if they haven't traveled before. Have your neighbors watch for him around your house, as well. Especially if your house is near your mom's. Sure hope you find him♡

The tips below work well for indoor cats lost from home. But, if ur kitty has stayed with your mom before, and/or knows her voice well, she may have success with these tips at her house. Also, if she can sit outside (when weather permits) and just "chat", even if no one is with her, and say his name every now and then during the "conversation", it may create a comfort zone for him to approach her house, over a few days. (Here are the tips im referring to:) Since he/she's an indoor kitty, he/she'ss likely very nearby, within a 7 house radius, hiding in fear. One of the most effective tips I see posted is- Take treats and a flashlight out when it's dawn/dusk/ night. Walk slowly, shine light under bushes and other areas, like decks and crawl spaces, and up into trees. Pause, shake treats, calmly call his/her name. Listen for rustling sounds or replies. Take a few more steps, repeat. Many cats will not reply even to owners when lost. Important to keep ur voice calm and gentle, even though ur stressed and panicked. Post on NextDoor. Notify mail carrier that ur looking for him/her. Notify neighbors so they know he/she's not a stray if they see him/her. Look at neighbors doorbell cams for sightings. ****Indoor cats will often try to get back inside, but can't find a way in.**** If safe, leave a door or window cracked, with smelly cat food and/or your worn clothing nearby. If not safe to leave door open, make sure u still leave water out for him/her. Food, too, if u can keep an eye on it to make sure dominant strays don't get to it and consequently keep him/her away. Have a safe, warm box shelter nearby, too. Since you're out of town, it's critical for your mother in law to take action asap and not wait for her to return on her own. Hope some of this info helps! Sharing these excellent tips from a cat rescue/TNR expert- Check house thoroughly. Check up in trees. Check animal control in person and report as missing and take photos with you. Post flyers in Spanish and English around your neighborhood. Look for him/her after dark as cats are most active between midnight and 6:00 a.m. However, go outside anytime after dark, using a flashlight look for "eyes glowing" under and inside of any outbuildings on your property and surrounding properties as well. Look under your home's crawlspace, porches, decks, bushes, trees and nearby woods. Look inside of storm drains and driveway culverts. A lot of cats are found hiding in them. Call kitty's name (softly) listening for a response. If your kitty gets treats, shake a treat bag while calling his name. If all else fails borrow a pet safe humane kitty trap from a local animal rescue group or buy your own at Tractor Supply and try trapping him. These are often very effective. To bait the trap: place a dirty clothing item of owners inside along with water and tuna or sardines. *COVER the trap with dark colored towels or a tarp to keep it dark inside so kitty will enter. *Note: if you do trap your kitty, DO NOT OPEN the trap outside to release him or kitty might bolt. CARRY your trapped kitty indoors (inside of the trap) and release him in the safety of your home. Place a night camera in your yard to see if kitty is showing up after dark. A trail cam is an excellent idea. Also, place a camera on the trap if possible synced to your cell phone so you will know when kitty gets trapped. Check with neighbors close by and animal shelter daily. Also, ask your mail carrier to be on the lookout for your kitty. Hopefully, you can locate kitty shortly on your own. If you don't find kitty, contact a Pet Tracker. Post flyers because everyone is not on social media. Post on Nextdoor. Post on Pawboost. Hire a tracker. If he/she's chipped, contact the chip company and make sure your info is current and correct. Mistakes are often made. If you have a microchip from "Save This Life" company, which closed down and removed their database, here is how to update: https://www.foundanimals.org/ Other chip companies for updating: https://www.petlink.net/account/register-pet https://www.homeagain.com https://www.akcreunite.org
