If you have multiple dogs, and one is missing, something else you can do is take one on a walk from your house to the area in which you lost the dog. Let your dog mark/sniff/touch/lick/chew on everything it wants to along the way, and the lost dog will often pick up the trail and follow it home. ( found from Reddit)
