Tips Lost Cat If this is posted for the owner, let them know to join the group and tag them. If adopted from rescue or shelter notify them immediately since they may offer help. Cats don’t always come back on their own. Setting a trap and following tips offered is important. Ask local shelter for listing of a rescue with an experienced trapper who may help. They may also lend you a trap and show you how to use it. If they have no listing look on Petfinder for rescues in your zip code. Avoid all text, Instagram, and "miracle pet finder" scams. Don't ever give up hope, keep searching, and update group! Posters with “Do not chase, call with sighting” are very important and using Pawboost has helped many owners as well. Marie Ganz helped a local rescue find two cats on separate occasions lost for over a month and has helped many other owners. Her contact info is listed below along with other tips. Have neighbors check their Ring videos. Feel free to message me to review if needed. Feel free to copy & paste to share with any owners of lost cats. Here's tips for finding lost cats. If the cat was adopted from a rescue, notify them immediately and ask if they can offer help and suggestions. If no one saw cat leave house, search thoroughly inside using flashlight to see eye reflection and open and check closets, cabinets, drawers, attics and bats - make sure he or she didn't get stuck in ceiling by pushing tiles open, or anywhere else. You can keep closet and other inside doors open and place bowl of food with flour around it to see if it’s been eaten - look for paw prints. Cats hide when not feeling well. FIRST and most importantly, read tips on missinganimalresponse (.com) websites for information on searching based on cat's temperament, behavior, and whether indoor only, indoor/outdoor, or outdoor only. Also use information on sites for neon poster format (always add Do Not Chase - Call with Sighting, Check Sheds, Garages etc. with Flashlight.), resource links, and pet detective services. If your cat is indoor only and spayed/neutered, he or she is probably hiding nearby and staying within 5-10 houses or if further, 5-10 blocks in either direction or less unless chased out of territory. Normally they hide first few days and then venture out at night or early morning for food when quieter. They usually find a specific place to access for shelter like in or under sheds, decks, porches, garages, or by bushes establishing this as a base to leave from looking for food and return ing to. for safety. Inside only cats are usually more scared, hide longer, and stay closer to home. See more tips below. Conduct searches starting at home and expanding in circular radius from starting point to thoroughly check and cover areas. Repeat as necessary. Put supervised only trap and check every 2 hours in good weather and every half hour to hour depending on hot or cold temperatures with food in it in your yard and by last sighting. Keep in mind setting 3 traps spaced out in triangle increases chances. Never leave trap set when no one is there, close trap, remove bait food, and wash trap if another animal was caught. May be better not to leave food overnight to avoid attracting wildlife, etc. or just use dry food if trapping at night. Make sure each trap is covered top and sides, supervised at all times, and checked often. Put 1/2 of dry food feeding and water out daily after 2nd or 3rd day and away from trap to keep in area. Put something that smells like you (worn socks) and cat (toy, bedding, etc.) in yard and smaller item(s) in trap or nearby - add catnip if he or she likes it. Many advise not to put out used litter, as it may attract a predator. Note: Kentucky Fried Chicken (no bones) is a good choice to use for bait food and/or their favorite food. Go with your intuition with what may work best for your cat. Many people use Pawboost it’s a very good alert system and comments on Facebook posts update on pawboost (.com). There are also petamberalert (.com), petfbi (.org), and lostmykitty (.com) for poster and notification services to neighbors, vets, shelters, and rescues in area. Nextdoor and Ring Neighbor apps are also useful for notifying neighbors and checking for alerts in the area. Ask if neighbors have Ring or other security video cameras that they can check and notify you of any sightings. Put up posters ASAP, and notify non-emergency police and animal control in surrounding areas and bring posters for them to put up on bulletin board. Enlist daily help by giving posters to neighbors, joggers, walkers, dog walkers, public works, mailmen, and older children who are out regularly in area to keep an eye out for your pet. Make sure to speak to and give posters to anyone feeding cats in your neighborhood. Post on local, town, county, and state lost and found Facebook and social media pages - Post in Lost Cats in New Jersey and elsewhere and do a search on Facebook and other social media for other lost pages to post. Leave garage, shed, or porch open for cat to access, put their bed and something with your scent and theirs, when possible. In wintertime, put out shelter, igloo with straw etc. Use baby monitor to hear if crying during night, and you can purchase security camera and/or wildlife camera with IR night vision to monitor activity in yard and by feeding station. Newer ones have Apps to view immediately if a photo is taken. Ask neighbors if you can check yards, garages, porches, and in and under sheds and decks - use flashlight. Ask them to check as well. Go at dusk, evening, and before dawn with a good flashlight to see reflecting eyes. Check trees, as well. Do not chase, or call. If sighted lie on ground shake treats to see if your cat will come to you. Most go into feral mode so it is better to set a trap in yard and at last sighting following above instructions. Ask area rescues if they can assist with hanging posters if you need help with this and especially with trapping if they have experienced volunteers. Remember indoor only cats may hide first few days but venture out when hungry coming out of hiding when quiet. DO NOT CHASE! (Put this on all flyers!). If hiding place is found, set supervised only and covered traps with permission in that area. In extreme hot or cold weather trap must be watched when set and checked hourly. Check petfinder (.com) for cats in rescue and shelter, and go to local shelters in person daily. If cat has microchip, call the company to report lost and ensure chip is registered and information is correct. If open to this, you can try animal communicator Marie Ganz who is on Facebook to provide detailed description of area pet is lost and will provide updates when requested if pet is on the move. She has helped reunite multiple owners with their pets. You can consult with Kimberley Freeman if Marie is unavailable and if Kimberley still offers consultations. Get a cheap wired video camera and put it outside showing the area where you put his uncovered litter box. Then you can see if he comes back to it! You can get a camera with a 50’ cable that plugs into your tv or use an old tv 📺 so you can monitor the area Video cameras are under $20 on Amazon

Here are some tips that I found on finding a lost cat...... First, please do not panic, stay calm, your cat needs all of your energy to help bring him home. Don’t waste any time, start immediately. Indoor cats don't travel far from home. 90% of missing cats are usually hiding nearby, within a 5 house radius of your home. Draw a circle around your home and go out 5 houses in every direction. This area must be searched thoroughly and knock on every single neighbors door. Install a security camera to see if it shows up at night or during the day when you’re not out looking (if you can’t afford one, see if you can borrow one from someone ). Put food and water outside by the door if you think he got out. Check all possible hiding spots on your property and around bushes. Check storm drains, inside sheds, and garages and look up in trees and under cars. Check the same spots multiple times. Let your neighbors know and ask if they can check their property, sheds and garages or ask if they'll let you check. Cats are most active in the early morning and late at night. At night look around with a flashlight. A cat's eyes will reflect the light. If your neighbors have a security camera ask if they could check it. Put flyers up around the neighborhood too. Let the local vets know and even go to the shelter that takes in animals from your town. Leave a flyer with both. Let your police department and animal control officer know too in case anyone finds him and contacts them. Leave them with a flyer too. Put out the cat’s bed or towel and some of your unwashed clothing so that they can catch their scent and yours; If your cat is indoor only, you must set a humane trap immediately....(Google local rescue groups in your area to borrow one or call your local shelter and ask them for one or ask them to help you trap). Get lots of tuna in vegetable oil NOT Water, because it is very smelly, and does not freeze in cold weather....if you know the direction your cat went, SOAK the ground with tuna juice from two different directions, one from the direction your car went and one from another direction close by up to the door of the trap & put very little bits of tuna along the way on the tuna juice trail, up to the front of the trap and then very little bits of tuna through the trap to the back of the trap where you leave more tuna on a paper plate .....(on the outside of the trap and through it leave only VERY LITTLE bits of tuna, you want the cat to be hungry and go to the back of the trap); this MUST be monitored at all times and in the heat must be changed out every hour... do not sit close... you want to be able to see it but you want to make sure your cat comes in close, things should be very very quiet and if it’s getting dark, lights should be low outside and inside the house; On top of the trap put UNWASHED clothes you have worn, (T-shirt/socks) and on top of that cover it with a towel that you also used so all these items have your scent on it; If this is an indoor/outdoor cat you can also use the tuna juice trail leading up to a bowl of tuna… This also MUST be monitored.... Only people who your cat is comfortable with should be searching for her; Everyone should have a BRIGHT flashlight with them at daytime and night time, search every area thoroughly, checking every inch, lost cars can curl up into such tight balls...look under anything with a tarp on it, pool covers, grill covers, furniture covers, in any kind of a hole or crevice, all the way under porches, under bushes, in bushes, in trees, all the way underneath sheds within that 5 house radius, many cats hide all the way under sheds ... please ask your neighbors if you can search their properties thoroughly, please check all their garages every square inch, under cars, anywhere a cat could hide, sewers, water basins if they are by you, again every square inch... Make up flyers with a really good picture of your car that is large, put “Missing” at the top and the date.. put your phone number underneath in big bold letters that can be seen clearly and the cat’s name… Deliver posters to as many neighbors as you can, also give them out to all local delivery people, the mailman, fed ex man, workers in the area, dog walkers, all of them see so much… Bring them to the local police, animal control, vets offices and animal shelters, starting within a 2 mile radius of your home (you may have to go out further later if your cat is not found) …Also ask all local businesses if you can put flyers up in their windows; put them up for at least a 2 mile radius on telephone poles, etc.; Go to all local animal shelters at least every other day and call them on a daily basis..You must go there yourself because they are overwhelmed and there are Night people that may not realize that your cat has been brought in.. Do NOT put a litter box out as it will attract Feral cats and other predators who will scare your cat away and will catch mouse droppings and bird droppings and change the scent. Go out at night and walk slowly, looking for the shine of your cats eyes with a BRIGHT flashlight, usually they are most active half hour before and after sunrise and sunset.. when you are searching call your kitties name softly and then really listen to see if you can hear him.. remember they are usually within a 5 house radius... If this is the only cat in the home, and you can, leave your screen door open at night & sit there quietly, you’re cat may come right in the door or leave a window open that your cat can come home thru... if you have a garage, leave the garage door open slightly... keep the lights low in and outside your house and keep things inside and outside your house very very quiet, so that it does not feel threatened by coming home; Some cats come home on their own, some you must search for, and some you must trap with a humane trap… Some cats who get out are so terrified they will revert to some feral behavior and hide even though their owner might be very close by and calling...... for these cats you have to trap them. Cats who are indoor/outdoor will also mark their territory with the scent glands from their mouth when they rub their face against a tree, etc. and they also have scent in their paw pads that they will follow to go back home, but when it rains these scents are diminished and then they cannot find their way home. That’s why it is imperative to begin searching immediately for them. There’s a site called LostMyKitty. They offer a service that does Amber alert phone calls to surrounding houses for a fee. If you decide to use this service, choose the free option first. Keep repeating everything and take all of the suggestions. I hope these tips help and you find your cat soon. Your cat wants to come home, keep the faith and don’t give up. See video below. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/15zkDNZJnB/?mibextid=wwXIfr
