IMMEDIATELY CHECK ALL SMALL SPACES!! Under houses, in sheds, in culverts, wells, every small space! Go to the shelter IN PERSON, at least every other day. They are required to hold strays for only 3 days if there is no chip. IMMEDIATELY cut several smelly socks into strips and hang everywhere outside. Lost dog experts also highly recommend putting the dog's bedding outside. Create flyers, give to the mailperson, sanitation workers, vets, shelters, pin to bulletin boards at groc stores, tape to bus stops, etc. Also, highly recommend posting to as many lost pet sites as possible. Here are some, starting with the best: HELPINGLOSTPETS.COM, FIDOFINDER.COM, PETAMBERALERT.COM, CRITTERALERT.COM, LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM, PETALERTUSA.ORG, USLOSTDOGREGISTRY.COM, PAWMAW.COM, FOUNDLOSTDOGS.COM, LOSTPETALERT.COM, ILOVEPETS.COM, MYLOSTPETALERT.COM, PETCOLOVE.COM, FINDTOTO.COM, LOST_DOG.ORG, VERY IMPORTANT!!! Post to NEXTDOOR.COM & CRAIGSLIST.COM - many reunited in these free sites. Obtain a 'Live Trap', place near where missing, but away from roads, and in shade. Put smelly dog bedding or owner's smelly socks inside, & put water to drink. Lost dog trackers highly recommend grilling bacon outdoors! USE HASHTAGS - ex: #dachshund #chihuahua #chiweenie, etc. It will increase the odds of a reunion.

Here are the steps to take to find the owner or your lost dog. Do what applies to your situation: 1. If this happened in your neighborhood, put a large sign in your yard that says LOST or FOUND dog. Communicate with neighbors. The more people that know the better. 2. If you found a dog, have the dog scanned for a chip at a vet or 24/7 Emergency animal clinic. (Petco and Petsmart are not good choices as they may not carry a universal scanner and may miss picking up a chip). Make sure the dog is secured first with leash and collar so it can't bolt when taking for a scan. It's free and you shouldn't need an appointment. Call ahead of time to see if they have a "universal" scanner. 3. If you lost your dog and it is chipped, alert chip company IMMEDIATELY and make sure all of your contact information with them is current/correct. 4. If it happened in Maricopa County, call Maricopa County Animal Care and Control to report found or lost dog at 602. 372. 4598 from 8 am to 5 pm daily, so they can add all information to their database AND also use this link to add dog to their lost/found map.: https://www.maricopa.gov/162/Lost-Found-Pet in case the owner is searching on that site. 5. If the dog was lost or found in another county, please contact that county's Animal Control to report as lost or found. 6. If the location lost or found is not in your post, please be sure to add city and major cross streets, as well as, the date and time it happened. 7. Put SIGNS up throughout the area it took place. Get bright poster board from the dollar store & a fat marker, cut into 4 pieces, write LOST or FOUND DOG, phone # and a picture. Keep it simple since drivers only have seconds to see it. 8. If you can't catch the dog OR need additional help finding your lost dog, contact Hartt Animal Rescue and trapping for help.: (602) 601-2604, https://azhartt.org/ Hartt form to fill out to trap stray animal: https://azhartt.org/strayhelp/ Hartt form to fill out to get help with your lost pet: https://azhartt.org/programs-services/lostpethelp/ 9. EMERGENCY: If you found a sick or injured stray and need an ambulance, or if you suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, call the Arizona Humane Society's emergency Field Dispatch at 602.997. 7585, ext. 2073 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. After hours, please contact your nearest emergency animal clinic. 10. If you found a sick or injured stray, and it is not an emergency, contact Arizona Humane Society. See phone number and link below in "Other Resources". 10. If you think your dog was stolen, call nonemergency police. 11. If you found a deceased dog, call your city's deceased animal pick up. 12. IMPORTANT: If you FOUND a dog, be sure to verify proof of ownership including pictures and vet records before handing over to anyone. Unfortunately there are people who search these sites who will try to claim as their own without proof looking for a free pet, will ask to foster or adopt before owner is found without connections to a rescue. They can be very convincing. They may just repeat specific information YOU added in your post and picture, but only want to harm the dog. If anyone offers to foster or adopt if owner is not found, PLEASE ask a rescue to help make sure the person is legit. 13. IMPORTANT: If you LOST a dog, be careful of people trying to SCAM you. They will contact you and "say" they have your dog and want money from you before giving your dog back. If you are offering a reward, do not provide the reward until the dog is in your possession. Sites are updated all day long. SHELTERS AND RESCUES ARE VERY FULL. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE DOG SAFE OR DON'T GIVE UP IF SEARCHING. Please update your post if the owner or lost pet is found. PSA: As a community, we all need to spay/neuter our pet, keep a collar and tag with contact information on our dog, vaccinate, chip AND register the chip and STOP backyard breeding. Thanks!
