Post on Nextdoor and Neighbors Ring apps. Indoor cats stay close to home and may hide. Put out items of unwashed clothing or towels with your scent on it, 🚫DO NOT put a litterbox outside or in your garage with door cracked despite some people advising you to, it can attract predators, dogs or tomcats to the area that could endanger and chase him/her off preventing your cat from returning home.🚫 Go out multiple times between dusk and dawn with a flashlight to look for eyeshine, bring his/her treat bag and shake it while calling his/her name. You can even try a laser pointer toy and shine it around on the ground while out looking. If he/she is microchipped make sure your contact info is up to date and contact chip company to report as missing. Put up flyers within a 1 mile radius, not everyone uses social media. Talk to your neighbors, have them check garages, yards and sheds. Check the animal shelter daily, go in person often and bring a photo of your cat because they don’t always update their website daily, they are notoriously unreliable over the phone, telling people their pet isn’t there when it is and can be resistant to letting people go in the cat area to look for their cat so be firm and polite (The Animal Foundation). Most importantly be consistent and persistent, get out there on foot, not car, after dark everyday to search and don’t give up. Once you find him please be responsible and secure the doggie door so he cannot go outside anymore and keep him indoors only to protect him from coyotes, cars and bad people. There is always that one time for a cat that is allowed to go outside that they never come home because something preventable happened to them.

Search your own home and yard first Check closets, garages, sheds, under beds, behind appliances, bushes, block walls, side gates, patios, crawl spaces, and nearby hiding spots. Henderson says lost/found animals are held for a minimum of three days for owner reclaim. 4. Search online shelter listings daily Best to go in person. Photos can be delayed, and descriptions may be imperfect, so look at every similar animal, not just exact breed or color matches. The Animal Foundation often does not immediately upload new intakes on websites. Some animals may not be listed at all. The Desk Staff often are not aware of all the dogs and cats that are in the kennels. Bring your receipt of the vaccinations that your dog (cat) has had with you when you go to The Animal Foundation to look for your pet. Notify your microchip company that your dog or cat is missing. Henderson requires dogs and cats over four months old to be microchipped and licensed. Most Important Reminder Do not give up after one day. Many pets are found days, weeks, or even longer after going missing. Keep checking shelters, online listings, and neighborhood posts every single day.
