🐱🐈 🐶 🐕 Good advice from (Facebook) Barbara Clemons. Many missing cats are hunkered down near their homes and may be afraid to come out or unable to find their way home. But cats have an incredible sense of smell and can detect familiar odors from some distance so try these things, all of which need to be placed outside in a dry place: 1. An item or two of your clothing that you have worn but not yet laundered; 2. A rug or blanket or plush toy of kitty's; 3. A dish of smelly canned cat food; be mindful of attracting other animals. 4. Use electric can opener outside so kitty might hear it; 5. A container with a cup or so of used kitty litter. 6. Play familiar sounds for them to follow. All of these items will create a veritable smorgasbord for your cat to recognize! Also, if you have a garage, leave the door up a few inches so your cat can get inside. 7. When posting, please include where your pet was lost. Good luck! I know only too well the heartbreak from a missing furbaby!❤ Smells could welcome unwanted guests? P.S. I'm the Founder of Becky's Animal Rescue Network and I have experience with lost dog searches. 💜 Lost Dog Advice • Leave an access point open if it’s safe to do so. Many dogs try to circle back to the last place they saw their person but will leave again if they can’t get inside a yard or home. A cracked gate, garage, or door can make all the difference. • Post immediately on Nextdoor, Ring Neighbors, local Facebook lost/found pet groups, and PawBoost. Ask neighbors specifically to check security cameras rather than just “keep an eye out.” • Use scent to guide them home. Put out unwashed clothing, a worn pillowcase, your dog’s bedding, and their favorite toy near your door. Cooking something strong like bacon outside can help carry scent. • Search smart: Go out during quiet hours (late night/early morning) when dogs are more likely to move. Bring high-value treats and avoid chasing. Sit or kneel and speak softly if spotted. • Flyers still work. Put up large neon posters at intersections and near where last seen. Include BIG photo, name, phone number, and “DO NOT CHASE.” • Check shelters daily (online and in person if possible) and notify local vets and animal control. • Use a humane trap if sightings show the dog staying in one area. Many rescues or shelters will loan them. • If spotted: Don’t call loudly or run toward them. Turn sideways, crouch, toss treats behind you, and let them approach.
