What to Do If Your Cat Is Lost Important: Most Cats Hide Nearby — Even When Lost in an Unfamiliar Area Cats are instinctively cautious and tend to stay hidden, especially when they’re in unfamiliar territory. Whether your cat escaped from home or got lost while traveling or visiting, the first 24–48 hours are critical. 1. Act Quickly — Start Close • Indoor-only cats: Typically hide within a 3–5 house radius (or 50–200 feet). • Lost away from home: Begin your search at the point last seen. Cats will often hunker down silently nearby, especially under decks, porches, bushes, or sheds. • Use a calm, conversational voice—panicked calling can scare them deeper into hiding. 2. Scent Matters — Create a Familiar Environment • Place bedding, worn clothing, favorite toys outside the home or lost location. • If the cat was lost during travel (e.g., vet, groomer, friend’s house), leave scent items at the last known spot and stay nearby for extended periods—some cats will approach familiar voices or smells once they feel safe. • Do not leave litter boxes outside; these can attract aggressive or territorial animals. 3. Use Strong-Smelling Food to Lure Them Out • Place food and water near the door or at the spot lost. • Drop small spoonfuls of tuna, sardines, rotisserie chicken, or warm wet cat food in a scent trail leading to the feeding station. • Check the food quietly from a distance to avoid scaring the cat away. 4. Leave Shelter Access • Leave your garage or door cracked open at night so the cat can slip inside. • If traveling, leave a blanket-lined carrier or box near the lost site to provide shelter. 5. Search Strategically • Use a flashlight at night to spot eye shine. • Look under porches, bushes, sheds, decks, cars, crawlspaces, and inside garages. • Walk the area at dawn and dusk—peak times for a frightened cat to emerge. • Ask neighbors to check their property and open garages or sheds briefly. 6. Use a Humane Trap • Borrow or rent a live trap and bait it with tuna or sardines. • Use the trap in quiet areas where your cat may be hiding. • Check it often to avoid trapping non-target animals or leaving your cat exposed. 7. Spread the Word Widely Post on: • PetFBI.org • Pawboost • Love Lost (Petco) • Lost Cats Minnesota (Facebook) • MN Lost/Found Cats (Facebook) • Eden Prairie Lost & Found Pets (Facebook) • Animal Humane Society – Call 952-435-7738 • Nextdoor • Craigslist – Community > Lost & Found When posting, include: • Date and location lost (cross streets, neighborhood, or building) • Gender, size, age, and whether neutered/spayed • Colors, markings, fur length • Collar/microchip/ID tag? • How the cat was lost (e.g., door left open, carrier escaped) • Your contact phone/email 8. Notify Local Authorities • Contact the Animal Humane Society, local vets, and emergency clinics. • Notify your cat’s microchip company and ensure contact info is up to date. 9. Use Signs & Flyers • Place brightly colored, waterproof signs at major intersections and stop signs. • Post flyers in newspaper boxes (not mailboxes—it’s illegal). • Include a photo and short description with contact details. ⸻ Final Note: Cats lost away from home (at a cabin, during a move, vet visit, etc.) often try to return to their last known safe place. Stay near the location, use scent and sound, and be persistent. Many cats are found days or even weeks after going missing—don’t give up! No matter how long your kitty has been gone, stay vigilant with all lost cat protocols and advice - kitty may have been taken in by a well meaning person and could be very near - keep posters and flyers fresh and communications current with local animal control, vets, and rescues for new leads - keep the faith 💪🏼 Use whatever is applicable in the following for your situation: Extra strength prayers your kitty is safe nearby (cats usually stay in the vicinity) and home very very soon - put their food and warm shelter outside your door in a protected area and/or in your garage - diligently canvas the area and local businesses with large colorful posters and flyers - contact local animal control, vets, and rescues for any possible leads - cross post on neighborhood/community FB pages for further reach - cats are superior survivalists - stay vigilant in searching and don’t lose hope 🙏🏻❤️💪🏼 P.s. Beware of scammers saying they have found your kitty and need $$$ and your contact information. And also, how an Instagram/FB site helped them find their pet - don't click on site. All BS scammers. 🙏❤️💪🏼
