🐈‍⬛️🐾CATS NEWLY MOVED TO A NEW AREA or NEW HOME who get out and go missing 🐾🐈‍⬛️ FIRST and FOREMOST, IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW A LOST CAT WILL BEHAVE as otherwise an owner can MISTAKENLY reduce their chances of finding their cat… A lost cat who is new to an area having moved house or who is a new rescue pet will behave totally differently to how it behaves at home! The cat will feel frightened finding itself outside in an unfamiliar territory; it will revert to INSTINCT and HIDE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. There will be no familiar smells; it will be in a territory marked by other cats. It will feel very unsafe and will seek the FIRST HIDING PLACE it can FIND and STAY THERE Silently. They “disappear” in order to feel safe. A frightened cat will NOT keep RUNNING. Running more than a short distance would be opposite to their instinct and being visible in other cats’ territory will be frightening for it. It will be terrified finding itself outside. It will hide quickly and will most likely be within 5 houses 100 metres distance from home. THINGS YOU MUST DO: FIRST: SHELTER, FOOD, WATER and the SCENT of the OWNER. Immediately leave fresh food and water outside your home or in a sheltered area close to your home. Set up a large, sturdy box lined with a towel that is dry but used by you (not washed) and other items that smell familiar to your cat such as your unwashed socks which will have a lot of familiar scent on them. A predominant sense in cats is their sense of smell and so use this to guide him to you. Your cat may return while you are asleep or away from home; food and shelter may keep him there. Or hang these items outside on line if not raining. Cats can scent home for 3 miles. SECOND: SEARCH AND CALL IMEDIATELY they are noticed missing. AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. Every day. Keep doing this for several weeks. The MOST IMPORTANT thing you must do is physically SEARCH and CALL. Focus heavily on the immediate vicinity of the outside of your home to a 5 house radius. But also go further too: walk to the end of your road and call as you walk toward your house so you don’t inadvertently lead your cat further away from its home. Do the same on parallel roads. DO NOT CALL AND WALK ON. STOP and WAIT for a good long time. Call as you walk toward your home not away from it. Your cat will be very scared being outside in an unfamiliar area. Call in your normal voice so your cat is reassured that it is safe. They will pick up on the slightest anxiety as cats are hugely sensitive. A newly moved in cat is likely to be NEARBY but VERY FRIGHTENED and PANICKED; It will not immediately rush straight out of hiding on being called as its instinct is to protect itself from a real or perceived threat (just being outside will terrify indoor cats). One timid cat remained in its hiding place for 22 days as the sound of a neighbour’s dog barking prevented it feeling safe to come out. Other, bolder cats may feel safe to respond within hours or days. Many other cats take several days and often ten to twelve days before they break cover in the need for food and water. THINGS YOU MUST DO: WHEN is the BEST TIME TO SEARCH? It is important to search and call regularly throughout each day, but, if you can do this and it is safe for you to do this night-time calling significantly raises you chances of your cat responding. A Best time is when the WORLD HAS GONE TO BED. Late at night or very early hours of the morning before people are up, when there is minimal traffic noise. Call in your garden frequently overnight. When walking on the street near your home, take someone with you to stay safe. Carry cat treats, a tin of strong-smelling food such as sardines you can quickly pop open via a ring-pull, A cat carrier too but hidden if they freak out your cat. When you find your cat it may struggle and scratch as it will still be feeling panic. WHY WHEN DARK AND QUIET? Because: 1. CATS FEEL SAFER IN THE DARK from predators and are more likely to leave their hiding place and come to you on being called. 2. The cat will be LESS AFRAID OF NOISE as people and traffic will be massively reduced. 3. SOUND TRAVELS MUCH LONGER DISTANCES at night
