we have all been brainwashed that animals need to be neutered young and that is because the majority of owners are irresponsible. But yes mistakes can happen I feel for your loss
Dr. Karen Becker is a very well-known veterinarian who now believes that veterinarian should be doing a process called sterilization, not a spay or neuter.
unfortunately this is where United States is actually behind the curve ball as she said she couldn't find any veterinarians in the United States that know how to do this. Now that was a article of a couple 5 years ago so I don't know if it has caught on here.
I would consider consulting an animal communicator whether you believe in that or not it's certainly worth a try. Some of them have really good reputations for finding lost dogs.
One that comes to mind is Lydia Hibby I think that is how she spells her last name
