I saw a post on Facebook three days ago that a dog like this was rehomed a few months ago. I can’t find it now.

Actually the current thinking is for larger dogs to get some more bone density to wait for a 12 mos or more. For elbows, knees, femurs, wrists, etc not just hips - If at all possible. I know shelter dogs are neutered early, that's a trade off to slow population growth and prevent behavior problems being returned to shelters. Not a bad vet giving advice. Most owners are doing their best under many different circumstances. I hope you find your boy.
