Description

5/6/26 UPDATED INFO:: Updated every day or two, since initial posting, as we learn more about his s set and temperament. (last update 5/3/26) We call him: JOHNNY, after the Chuck Berry Song, "Johnny B. Goode". It was our hopeful wish that he would live up to the name, Johnny Goode. Praise Be. He HAS!!!!. ATTRIBUTES: Personality and Physical THIS dark leopard CATAHOULA is a remarkable dog. He clearly has been well loved and TRAINED by caring family/individual. Wants to please. HIGHLY INTELLIGENT. Very playful, without being overly active or assertive. He is young, an adolescent - approximately age 2 to 3; 26 inches tall, 34 inches long. He has a calm, solid temperament: He is curious and cautious, but/and open and willing to meet new people, non-aggressively, when given the opportunity to do so respectfully. He shows some alerting or guarding behavior, but will settle when given the command to do so. Shows appropriate alerting behavior. Alerts around men, when walking on leash (may bark, does not charge); accepted male "stranger" without trouble when told to "visit". When given a moment to access the stranger's energy, he becomes.comfortable. He has not yet been tested for calmness around children. He Is comfortable around other dogs, after appropriate introduction and dog-style meet and greet. He will calmly walk on leash with other dog(s), and can be in the same room as another dog without upset. Is curious about cats, has shown ease around them, doesn't have a demonstrated prey drive. He rides very well in a car/SUV; demonstrated willingness to enter and exit easily upon command. KNOWN S SET: Easily martingale collared and leashed, and uncollated and unleashed for walks. COMMANDS: Knows and Complies with "sit", "sit, stay". "lie down", " lie down, stay." "leave it", "leave it, walk on" "heel" or "with me" "no pulling" "cross" (used when crossing a street) "gentle" (when taking a treat from the hand) "off" Notes about command compliance and demeanor: Johnny follows the command to "sit, stay" at open door until released to exit or enter. He will "sit, stay" or "lie down, stay" at length of 30ft. He has demonstrated that he knows to sit stay when unleashed outside a gate in a unfenced yard. Full, reliable, compliance is untested. He is working on complying with "COME". His adolescent mind is clearly testing the limits of this command, in playful way of person giving this command. He IS in training to achieve full reliable compliance with the "COME" command. Knows how to heel and walk nicely on a leash, still has occasional pulling. Does a hand-off of leash to another person comfortably. Takes treats VERY gently from the hand. Complies with command, "LEAVE IT", when a treat is on the ground that he has dropped in front of him, and he is asked to move on. NO demonstrated discomfort with being petted around his head when he has rawhide in his mouth. [Taking treat from him or asking him to drop it has not yet been tested.] Johnny has NOT exhibited destructive behavior of furniture, shoes, etc. etc., despite all the stress. He remains solid and calm in his demeanor.. He demonstrates some, appropriate, guarding characteristics of person he sees as his; complies with statement, "it's okay, enough", "settle", or similar verbiage, MEDICAL HISTORY:: We know nothing about his medical history. Therefore, today, he underwent . testing for worms/parasites, heartworm, and received the first set of two vaccinations. Second round in two weeks. Will post shot record when complete. TESTED: Negative for heart worm. AND.... Neutered. Johnny is lying low for a few days to recuperate from surgery. Everyday training will begin again in earnest on this weekend. More updates to follow. WHAT JOHNNY SEEKS: Johnny seeks a place at a non- shelter, rescue, or better yet a foster, until a forever is found. He will need to have continuity in training AND stimulating intellectual/physical/playful outlets.
