Thank you for all your advice! Sunny was found after dark near the hse in a space we had checked countless times the last 2 days. For some reason he only chose now to pop out.

Cats have a great since of smell and can smell familiar scents from a mile or more away. So put out some bedding that he used, or something that you have worn that has your scent. Then at night leave a window up enough that you can hear him if he makes a noise. Calling him may help. A guy who had read many suggestions, including trying to call the cat after it was dark, went a bit further and used a Speaker Phone to call his cat.
